J. Coles line isn't even that great, it's an EXAMPLE. The line makes sense, he doesn't have to say "in other words" or come up with a stupid line to come before the punch like Eminem's lines on Recovery

Stick my dick in a circle, but I'm not 'fuckin a round'... That type of shit is stupid. That's Lil Wayne type shit, but that's what most mainstream people would UNDERSTAND. It's dumbed down for idiots to say "WOW EMINEM IS SO AMAZING!!"

If you, as an artist, dumb down your work just to get that wow factor from listeners.. then you're no better than Wayne, Drake, etc.

The punchlines on Recovery have never really been an issue for me. I'm not saying they are great or anything but they just don't ruin it... well ok, the window pane line in LTWL is horrible.

My problems with the album are the tiresome lyrical topics, shouty delivery and that I missed some traditional beats at times. He is rapping way too much about being "back and better than ever" and using a corny woman/hiphop analogy twice.

When listening to his first three albums it kindda makes me miss the sense of humour he had back in the days.

Musically I also felt that there are way too many different producers on the album. His other releases had less of those and that gave them all a trademark sound (so to speak).

I think the window pane line is so awful because it really sticks out amidst the otherwise brilliant writing in that song. I'm always like "Really, you couldn't come up with anything better? Really?"

And yeah, the first three albums are mindblowing. But I don't know if he'll ever reach that again. He's older now, the addiction had a lasting effect on him etc. I'm happy that he's doing good stuff now, but I'm not sure that he'll reach levels like that again. At least not for a whole LP. I thought GTC, LTWYL and Deja Vu as individual songs came close.

If we're making wish lists for the next album, I'd like more humour and less punchlines, wider range of topics, less shouting. Oh, and he needs to continue with that Michael J. Fox thing so everybody gets all annoyed about it again. Hell, throw in random shoutouts to reality TV "stars" from 2006.

OH MY GAWD! What a fuckin' difference!

Cuz' like ship's sail & transport records while doing so. He's even askin' will his albums even sale?

Yeah fuck Em & his corny punchlines! Cause' there's no other mainstream rappers today who use simple punchlines. No sir, Kanye would never, nor would B.O.B or even Lupe be caught dead sayin something corny like that.

Yeh man, you guyz should write a letter to Em.

To Em,

STOP BEING A BITCH.

P.S Drop the stupid Recovery shit, we want an Eminem show part 2. Otherwise we will slate & criticize your shit.

I don't mind them, some are simple for a reason, like Not Afraid, see how successful that was/is currently. Simple, yes, but maybe it was done for a reason :coffee:

i like the punches on Recovery and thought they were really creative...i like the fact that he took it back to his Infinite days and not had the same old literal rhymes that he has used since the MMLP

but i think the greatest strength of Recovery besides the massive sound and emotion is the word play...there was some great wordplay on this album. He still has a way to go to catch up to Wayne creativity with word play (even for those who hate him, it's hard to deny his cleverness when it comes to word play) but Recovery was definitely a step in the right direction imo.

With GTC and LTWYL, he came close. Though I think LTWYL > GTC.

They're all three great because he rhymes well while dealing with complex topics. The not dumbing anything down even though you only have a few verses to express yourself part is so impressive IMO. He does that constantly on the first albums. Now it seems to be more of a struggle, but he's still capable of it. I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to hip hop, but I do recognize great songwriting. Eminem is a great songwriter.

Deja Vu mixes dark humour into it, complex rhymes etc., so I guess it's perhaps objectively the best of the three. GTC has all these different angles on why he uses, the delusion, consequences for his daughters, final words on Kim.

I think I like LTWYL the most because it's so deceptive and the deception works for the message of the song. It sounds like a stereotypical country/pop ballad on first listen. But then you notice that Rihanna sings the same thing again and again...because the cycle starts over and over. The strummy guitars go against the harsh beats and the beats sound in certain moments like fists hitting. There's a sampled voice saying "round and round" during Rihanna's chorus. It gets louder at the end of the song. That and the break between the beginning and Em's first verse is the "broken records playing over".

The last verse that goes into the chorus where the fire theme becomes both literal and figurative. And of course the delusions and excuses of the abuser who finally can't lie to himself anymore and admits to the reality of the situation in the end. I also like that he's not presented as a monster but as a crappy human being who's out of control. Not this angelic helpless woman terrorized by evil dark lord stereotype. Not all DV situations work that way and IMO many forms of abuse don't get recognized as such because they don't fall into this one narrative the media seems to be spinning. All of that in 4 and a half minutes. Genius.

Erm, back on topic. He was hilarious on his first two albums without all these punch lines...perhaps he should just stay away from Lil'Wayne when writing? :D Not Afraid is really somewhat wrecked by the lame verses, not that sounding like Creed in the chorus helps.

ETA: @ MikeNUFC and Amadeo, thanks and right back at ya! Though you shouldn't encourage me, this forum is addictive as it is. I should be doing stuff for university or for my job... :sweating:

I don't think he's dumbing down with these punchlines on purpose for his audience, like some have said, I really do believe he thinks they're good. Punchlines, to me, always sound corny in rap - occasioanly I'll hear an impressive one but usually they're boring.

It's his storytelling I miss most, I think. He can definitely still do it (Deja Vu - sidenote: the dark humour in Deja Vu is Criminally underrated - see what I did with the word Criminal? Classic.) but there's not enough of it. His multies are still good - although they're harder to grasp due to his new Andre 3K style flow and they dont sound quite as effortless as they used to.

I am too critical with Recovery Eminem, though. To release an album of that quality 11 years into a career is very very good.

Yeah... you just described perfectly why LTWYL is great. All of that in 4 and a half paragraphs. Genius.

The connection you made between broken record sound at the beginning and the second verse lyric was cool. That went straight over my head.

I also didn't know that sample was saying "round and round and round."

My favorite part of the song is the third verse. That's brilliant writing. He went back to really creative rhyming for this song. I mean... huffin' paint/suffocate? Just goes to show he still has a way with words.

that ^
