That's why it's known as American football to the rest of the world. If you were the originator, we'd call it something else and just yours football.
American football grew out of Rugby.
Soccer pre-existed it, and was called football. You called it soccer.
But football is an ambiguous tag anyway. It's intended to be used for various games involving a ball and kicking of it, and defines whatever game each country plays.
But the word was used for 'soccer' before American football.
