Would MM LP have been a classic without TWIA and TRSS?

Postby CLV22798 » Dec 28th, '10, 06:20

As most people should know by now, The Way I Am and The Real Slim Shady were the last 2 songs he did before handing in Marshall Mathers LP to his label. Eminem had gave them the album without those 2 songs, and he thought the album was complete. But, Jimmy Iovine had told Eminem that he felt that the album was missing a big first single to introduce the album. Jimmy had told him to create something along the lines of My Name Is. Eminem started to feel so much pressure that he felt like he couldn't top My Name Is. He felt so much pressure that he kind of created an anti single, to let out how must frustration he was feeling because of his label. That song ended up becoming The Way I Am, which actually turned out to be my favorite Eminem song to date. After he let out some steam with that song, he went back to the drawing board to try and create a first single, and he eventually succeeded. To this day, The Real Slim Shady is arguably the best first single he's ever done. It's funny to me how Eminem didn't feel like he could top My Name Is, and IMO ended up succeeding with The Real Slim Shady.

My question here is: Would MM LP have turned out to be the classic it was, without The Way I Am and The Real Slim Shady making it on to the album? Truthfully, I don't think it would of been a classic. It still would of been a good album, but I don't think I would have liked it as much without those 2 songs on there. With those 2 songs appearing on the album, it topped The Slim Shady LP for me. If those 2 songs hadn't made the album, I would of felt like his first album was the better one.

What do you think?

TRSS was one of his clever, funny, and well written songs with that concept (as was without me), so I think that was a good addition, some good humor to the album

TWIA was one of his best songs ever, still is, and many non-em fans that I know love that song, and it def fit the album perfectly imo, so no that should be on there.

also, i thought it was pretty much accepted that the mmlp was a classic?

I know that MM LP is accepted as a classic, I was just wondering if people would still consider it a classic without The Way I Am and The Real Slim Shady making the album. They were 2 of the 3 singles for the album but if those 2 songs hadn't made it, I don't know if I would still consider it a classic.

He means would it "still" be a classic.

o fuck me then haha thanks for pointing that out.

My answer would honestly be no, I think they brought a lot to the album, mostly TWIA, that kind of "explained" his dont give a fuck attitude on that album, even tho established on the SSLP, those tracks dont count for the mmlp, so it did help and added a lot, as well as trss for what i stated before :y:

Nope, because it wouldn't have sold nearly as much without those 2 songs and therefore wouldn't have gotten so much attention from the media. And media attention / critical praise is an important part of what anoints something as "classic"

TRSS hype was insane back in 2000....everyone was talkin about it.

From a personal point of view... No. TRSS is Dispensable to me. While it has become a trademark that he has the humor, a completely serious album would still have been good enough for what it was not what it should be.

Geno wrote:Now that I think about it..sure, TWIA is a great track, and an awesome single and what not, but I feel like Marshall Mathers would have taken it's place and been a pretty good single / music video.

TRSS is a must imo though.

Dont agree though. Marshall Mathers is depressed, TWIA is angry- two necessary and incredible emotions
