Prologue
“So…who is she?”
“What are you talking about, baby?”
“Don’t play stupid with me! Who the f*ck is Jessica?!” I sighed, just ready for this conversation to end. “She’s nobody. I swear to you-”
“Liar! She called here, you know…and asked for you. And plus, you smell like her.” I puffed my cheeks. Busted.
“Baby, look. I’m sorry, okay? But don’t try and put this on me! You been f*cking around with other dudes too!” She rolled her eyes. “This isn’t about me. This is about you lying to me…in my face! You are such a great actor, Marshall. You’ve convinced me that you’re a lying, cheating bastard!” She made long angry strides towards me and before I knew it, her hand came hard across my face. She wasn’t gonna get away with that one.
I pushed her on the bed, making her yell more obscenities and held her down. She lunged a bare foot forward, kicking me in my stomach. “Ow! You b*tch!” Now angry, I pulled her up from the bed and slammed her against the wall and pinned her wrists above her head. We were both breathing heavily and glaring at each other for a good five minutes before I noticed her face softening. “M, why are we doing this? What are we doing?” I shrugged, still holding her wrists together. “I don’t know, girl…I just don’t know anymore.”
“Why did you lie to me?” I thought about lying again, but as I looked into those hazel eyes of hers that’ll make any man go out of his right mind, I made the decision that she didn’t deserve any more of my bullsh*t. “Rih, I…I don’t know.”
“I can’t do this anymore. We fight and argue everyday…I don’t need this.”
“So, what are you saying?” She sighed and directed her gaze towards the carpet. “I’m saying that me and you are not gonna work out. I’m all stressed out and whatnot because of you and your f*cking lies.” I slowly nodded and let go of her wrists. “You wanna go? Fine. Leave! Get the f*ck out of here!” She took her bottom lip between her teeth and made her way out of our room. I flopped down on my bed, belly up, and started to think. Think about how much our lives had changed in the past year. Many people don’t know the real reasoning behind the popular song that was making its way up the charts. They don’t know how much reality the hit song actually held. But we know…we knew that it was more than a song. We knew that it was life.
