Ricky Gervais - The Globes (2011)

Postby EminemBase » Jan 18th, '11, 19:07

Watching Globes, Gervais pretty class so far. Am a big Gervais fan, been following him since about 13, he rarely lets me down but "The Invention of Lying" and Science were poor.

Anyway, the Globes...

Good the way he was relentless and made it edgy, and used it as an opportunity to highlight the absurdity, self-seriousness and escapades of them all. But the fact people are divided with a lot thinking he went too far exposes the ridiculousness of Hollywood, celebrities and people with inflated egos who can't laugh at themselves (COUGH: Robert Downing Jr.)

It also shows how a lot Americans in particular misunderstand piss-taking as mean-spiritedness. They think ANY joke on a persona level is an 'attack' or rude, but how so when it's being said comically... that's the fucking point of comedy, to say what you wouldn't say in a straight manner. Which sounds like a crude generalization, I'm aware of that but I've seen many Americans agree with it and I don't think it's without its merit. I don't think it's due to intelligence (though, the more intelligent you are, I do think the more likely you are to get it), but more-so with culture.

America are the sort of... big swinging dick of planet Earth, the top dog and thus the culture and thinking inspires that thinking and promotes keeping it that way. The country as a whole is far more optimistic and 'up' than Britain, they celebrate winners and applaud success more. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just makes for a lot of farce, falseness, false humility and cheese. And doesn't leave much room for honest humour, dark humour or making fun of yourself.

I suppose there's themes as to why Britain's humour, or comedians, and people, tend to have darker humour and do humour which some Americans think is rude when it's in fact ironic and just, casual humour which British people use everyday with each other.

And I've even spoken to many Americans who agree with me and even on here, when I've made more... lightly toned humour say, I've seen a few people go "wow you don't usually use any humour in your posts" when I actually use humour quite a lot. I just use more sinister, real humour and not 'jokes', just humourous tones or views. Then occasionally somebody will point one out as if I wasn't aware it sounded humourous or was ironic lmao.

But, not having a real stab at America. I do hate the American government but, I hate most Governments and most people / irrespective of where they're from :tounge2: . Also, some of my favourite comedies (and comedians) ever are American - Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Larry Sanders Show etc. and they contain some of the smartest and darkest humour of all. So I'm not saying that all Americans are like this or they're incapable of intelligent understanding of comedy, I'm speaking simply of the one's that do not and saying, I think quite a lot (more than average) do not, in general America.

Again, not all Americans of course but, there's a definition validity to this view. Self-deprication is used less and I think less personal humour or, slightly more self-serious humour or maybe... less honest humour is at hand. Bu what's wrong with these few visibly annoyed people that they need 24/7 love, affirmation and praise lmfao. Don't they get enough of that all year round as it is. They're rich and successful, typically fulfilled and accomplished, and somewhat powerful and influential. Surely it's not the end of the world to highlight their odd fucking failure or point out some of their hypocrisy.

And surely an awards show - a ceremony dedicated to once again highlighting their brilliance and superiority, surely then is the time for some real humour and honesty lmao. If not then, when the fuck when. Delusional, sensitive twats  . Not to say Ricky was all-brilliant and genius, I still haven't finished it and there's a few lazy things, regardless of tone but the points stand regardless.

Well I personally hated it mainly due to the nominations being a joke. They should really get performances in the Globes :n:

Gervais was great, like it was one big roast but from my experiences of American & British comedy there's one key difference. Americans will take the mickey out of everyone else except themselves, British humour is more, dark and dry and takes the piss out of everyone, even themselves. Like you see American comedians come to Uk and make jokes about us, we're laughing along. Now if a UK comedian goes america and rips about their culture they take it personally. Like imagine Frankie Boyle going to Texas ripping their culture...he'd get lynched

Question: Do you write differently for British and American audiences?

Gervais: No, I… I don’t change it. I mean, the difference, you know, if we’re talking about the big 2, Britain and America, sorry, rest of the world, that’s not true. That was a joke. But the difference between English or British humor and American humor, it’s usually in the production as opposed to the finish core and how it… how it comes across. But if there is a difference and… I suppose I’m not an expert, it’s all guess work but just take the… the sort of I’ve been involved with “The Office” transfer, the remake, the American remake, well, it’s different. They’re slightly smarter. They’ve got better teeth. They got more ambition. They’re slightly broader. But the big difference is the Americans are more optimistic. And that’s due to the fact that Americans are told, they can become the next president of United States. And they can. British people are told, it won’t happen to you. And they carry that. They carry that with them. We… We champion the underdog. We champion the underdog to the point where it’s not an underdog anymore and it annoys us.

I also agree with this

One of the major differences seems to be how often both nations use irony. Brits use irony on a daily basis, whereas it is not the foundation of American humour. I think Americans understand British irony (most of the time anyway!), what they don’t understand is the need to use it so frequently. When Americans use irony they tend to state that they were “only kidding”. They feel the need to make a joke more obvious than Brits do, maybe this stems from a fear of offending people.

The American sense of humour is generally more slapstick than that in Britain. I think this arises from a cultural difference between the two. Their jokes are more obvious and forward, a bit like Americans themselves. British jokes, on the other hand, tend to be more subtle but with a dark or sarcastic undertone. There is usually a hidden meaning. This may stem from the fact that British culture is more reserved than American culture.
Certain American comedies have gained huge success in Britain and vice versa. Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation and understanding of the other sense of humour. Both the British and America versions of the comedy The Office are hugely successful on both sides of the Atlantic. Both shows have their own cultural differences, yet they portray a lifestyle which both Americans and Brits alike can relate to.

You do realise he is best friends with Steve Carrel in real life? Well okay, maybe not "best friends", but they are quite close.

The outrage/debate and media attention this has got is ridiculous. It wasn't even bad...at all.

Basically the same as last year I thought? What is the big deal. Like Ricky said on his blog...

"Thanks to the twitterverse, the blogosphere, all the journos and the coolest stars for coming to my rescue.

It was heartwarming to realise I wasn't losing my mind. Some reactions nearly had me believing I'd gone too far too. Nearly.

Can't wait for the people who thought it was over the top to see my stand-up shows. Fuck me, they will shit themselves."
