Eminem becomes the most popular person living on FacebookAt the beginning of this week, rapper Eminem reached the one billion view milestone on his official Youtube account. Now, within the last few hours, Marshall Bruce Mathers III has become the world’s most popular living person on Facebook.
According to Famecount.com, the social media statistics service, the US rapper has claimed the crown from Lady GaGa after reaching almost 29m Facebook fans or ‘likes’. He has finally overtaken the popstar in a closely contested and long drawn out battle – over the past months, the pair have been separated by less than a million Facebook fans.
In the end even Lady Gaga could not hold off Eminem, who has been recruiting fans at a rate of 546,000 every week – that’s more than the population of Luxembourg. And now the rapper is pushing on to overtake the only person with more Facebook popularity – Michael Jackson. The late King of Pop has just over 29m fans, but when comparing the pair’s current rates of fan growth, it looks unlikely that Eminem will fail to overtake MJ in the very near future.
Lady GaGa passes the mantle of Most Popular Living Person on Facebook to Eminem after only eight months of reign. She surpassed Barack Obama, who has since dropped to 12th place in the charts, on 25th June last year. She still retains her Twitter crown though, and Eminem will not threaten that for a long time as he languishes in 31st place in the service’s popularity ratings with just over 3 million followers to GaGa’s 8.4 million.
Daniel Dearlove, founder of Famecount, said: “This new landmark follows a spectacular year for Eminem, with the release of Recovery and wins at the Grammys matched by surging social media fame. Although Eminem cannot afford complacency. Lady Gaga knows how to command attention and the release of Born this Way puts her back in the spotlight. Meanwhile Rihanna is one to watch – currently the fastest growing star on Facebook.”
Despite hitting these two milestones in one week, Eminem is still the third most popular star on social media on Famecount.com aggregated lists. He finds himself behind Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber thanks to these stars’ greater reach on Twitter and YouTube. Groovecount.com, which also includes measures of fame across music digital services, places Eminem second after Lady Gaga.
