Mike, you're wrong, and I'm gonna tell you why.
Eminem was ALWAYS on drugs. You see, back in 1997 he worked two full-time minimum wage jobs so he could make enough money to purchase drugs and still have enough left over to buy Hailie some diapers and baby food.
When he wasn't working (and sometimes when he was), he was smoking weed, taking pills, doing shrooms, drinking, dropping acid, taking ecstasy tablets, and going to tons of rave parties. If Eminem got 2 hours of sleep per night, he was good to go. Usually he skipped those two hours and pulled all-nighters so he could polish some lyrics that he wrote entirely while he was either working or crazy super high on drugs.
If you listen to Slim Shady LP, you can see that Eminem was on tons of drugs. Listen to My Fault--clearly based on a true story. And on I'm Shady he tells you what he's on, though he's lying about some things when he says he's not on them because he was too embarrassed or ashamed to admit it. I'm sure he'd done coke before at some point. It's a hell of a drug...how could he NOT have?
When Eminem went on tour, all he did was get high. He never gave a performance in his life when he wasn't high, until now.
Also, it wasn't until Proof died that Eminem's drug use got to be too much for him to control. Even then, it wasn't as serious as before...just sleeping pills/pain killers. Those are way less dangerous for you than the stuff he was taking before.
But he was really depressed and just took too much of them and had to go to the hospital for a while. When he got out he looked at his three beautiful little girls and decided he wanted to get clean for them, so he, being the wonderful father that he is, decided it was time to stop.
Also, I doubt he's totally off drugs. I mean, yeah, he probably stopped popping tons of pills, but I'm sure he still smokes some weed every now and then, and probably still has a few beers. Heck, I'm sure he still pops a valium once in a while for old time's sake. No big deal, as long as he's not overdoing it.
