I think comedians in general, or people who think comedic (Eminem definitely included) generally... think more logical. Often, comedians are just sharing their bemusement at everybody else's illogic.

And, yeah that's nice, I think like that like what Seinfeld is saying there. I can get annoyed if like, you know if somebody... thinks they're right on something and they're not, or, I can get irritated easily but... I stopped getting 'offended' at things intended for that, a long time ago.

No comedian or person can 'offend' me with anything they say intended to be shocking. Outside of physically harming me how could a finger or just WORDS be offensive to me. Especially when they're being used FOR that purpose... it's arbitrary lmao.

It's like, RAPE A BABY RAPE A BABY, BABY WITH AIDS, FUCK A BABY IN THE FACE, CHOP A BABY INTO PIECES AND PISS ON ITS REMAINS. Like... even if you said that outloud most people would be horrified but... it's just words, it means nothing. It's just BLAH BLAH BLAH etc.

I literally just came into this topic to say it should be in the Eminem section, not chit-chat.

Great write-up, enjoyable read. I wish I could go back to 2000/2001 and witness first hand all the controversy that was going on regarding Eminem. I was too young to fully understand it back then.

Thanks. It's cool and somewhat weird to see people call it 'enjoyable'. I generally find it hard to read, even my own stuff lmao. And I don't enjoy my own stuff much because I've written it, so it feels unsurprising, as I was the one who wrote it all... so it's just, well just nice to see people actually get enjoyment out of reading it. And like I say, a little weird.

Also - I was very young then too, well I was... 10/11. And I didn't actually fully witness all the protesting or outrage. I think less of a fuss was made of it in the UK, because, well like I've said before I think Em's humour is more British. And that's in no way meant to dismiss or offend Americans (US have produced some of the greatest comedy ever) BUT, Britain in general, I think we use irony more and tongue-in-cheek and more 'dark' and sinister humour...

So I do personally think that Britain always got Eminem more. At least at first.

But, I did understand the material then, as in... on a base level. I got what he was doing but was of course not hip to some of the references and ideas, but I got and embraced it. But even if you were young like me - what you can do is re-evaluate it.

As, you can look back in hindsight and re-evaluate how you experienced it then, from memory (best you can) and look at it with your more mature, better understanding. But yeah I know what you mean in, I do wish I was like 20 when it hit too and the Internet as big as it is now etc. so that I could fully witness and cherish every moment of it. Would of been amazing.

I was like 8/9 when MMLP dropped and I can still remember quite an outcry in the UK. That says a lot.

Maybe not as much as America as I agree that we "got" it more - Em has a very dry, dark British sense of humour (I think Elton John said something along those lines after he performed with him).

But I think it only started getting bigger when Em came over here to perform and he had the chainsaw and there was all that talk about whether he had it turned on or not haha. Our media only gives a shit when it directly 'effects' us.

I think it speaks volumes about how big he was that even at such a young age I can vividly remember all his music being played and the controversy he brought. Crazy to look back really.

Yep. I think the best comedians always point out the absurdity of everyday things that we think are normal.

The middle toe thing was Eminem and Jerry arriving at the same thing via parallel thinking. Two funny like-minded guys. My favorite comedian is the guy in my avatar.

Yeah Eminem is an incredibly astute comedic thinker. That's what's most missed and under-appreciated in his music and I'm not talking about his silliness, or zany videos etc. of course but, the biting, seething wit of his early material. Some of the stuff is just SO fucking brilliant.

And yeah Louis C.K. is great, certainly one of the bravest comedians out now. I agree with Gervais in saying a comedian shouldn't just make you laugh but make you think. And, Louis C.K. is fearless and, exactly what a comedian should be.

His 1st show was actually pretty funny and I normally hate laughter tracks but on occasion it fits, and on that show it did. But, his new show is fucking good, can't wait for more.

I wouldn't say he's my favourite comedian but he was certainly an instant favourite. Definitely the guy to watch out now and along with Larry David, one of the guys creating genuinely important comedy. And, important in the sense of the quality. He matters.

I'd say Gervais is still my favourite, he's been seriously slacking of late but I'm looking forward to Life's Too Short. As, he said that it's 'all funny', which is a joy to my ears. As ever since he kept dwelling on emotion in Extras, I really had the wish inside that he and Merchant would just focus on the COMEDY. The emotion in The Office was bittersweet and poignant, close to perfection. Extras was less-so but still very good. But, I cannot wait to just see them creating pure comedy, everything else aside.

New Gervais, new Louis C.K. AND new Larry David creations coming on TV? It just doesn't get much better than that. Comedy is one of the only things that's almost relentlessly improved. There is great comedy of the past but right now, in our times, we're producing by far some of the most ground-breaking and hilarious comedy. Just imagine more Arrested Development now.

Oh, speaking of which - David Cross (who plays Tobias) in that, his series recently began in the UK. It's very fucking good. He's a great comedian also, you should check it out if you haven't. He's pretty similar to Louis in his execution on this, very brutal on himself.
