"Hi kids, do you like violence?" - Who Knew?

Postby MikeNUFC » Mar 9th, '11, 16:29

Why have I never noticed this?

"Ain't they got the same moms and dads
who got mad when I asked if they liked violence?"

I never linked that to the opening line of My Name Is, until just then.

Weird how I'd never picked that up before.

Who Knew about this?

Geddit? Who knew? HILARIOUS.

I thought it was obvious, and I'm not trying to sound smart, I guess we all usually think the references we catch are obvious. After all, we caught them. I love that he does this so often. He's not just making a bunch of individual songs and individual albums, he's not just telling individual stories, he's creating a whole universe.

Yeah, it's great. I love this one:

"She nearly got the same fate that Grady's bitch got" - Bad Influence

Grady's wife gets killed in Guilty Conscience.

What's so great about that is, is that in Bad Influence he is poking fun at the way his music is made to look literal (with that trademark MMLP irony), so by making out another song (Guilty Conscience) to be a real event just adds to the satire and irony.

The man's a genius.

Wow. I actually didn't know.

Can't believe I have never picked up on it either. I must have listened to the two songs over 500 times combined, in my lifetime too. God damn!!!

How the hell did I not notice? It seems soooo obvious now.

I knew what the violence line meant for ages, but I never noticed this before. It's funny that over 10 years has passed since these albums came out, yet there's still stuff to find out.

What I love about that line is he says it in his Slim Shady voice...kind of paying homage to himself, in a way. LOL.

Yes, but for a while I thought he had some wordplay in mind: hi/"high"..

Who knows, maybe he meant that too.

Yeah, I think it's a neat touch how Kill You and Criminal and Stan and Kim mirror each other, for example. That's why IMO Under The Influence is kind of in the way in the song order. Otherwise it would have been Kill You first, Stan second, Kim second to last, Criminal last. OTOH that's a real weakness of Recovery, the song order seems pretty random, you have no coherence.

Maybe, but it says "whenever you SAY hi" not "whenever you'RE hi(gh)".Dunno just thought it was a pretty obvious reference. :)
