Underrated Songs By Great Artists

Postby MikeNUFC » May 18th, '11, 19:30

For example...

I never see anyone mention this but it's one of my favourite Nas songs. It's a beautiful track - the combination of the beat/hook and the delivery make it sound so tragic - the switch from positive to negative in the second verse is done so effortlessly. The flow is pretty much perfect and the rhyming is nice.

Your choices?

Gangsta Tears has 2 verses. lol :p

But yeah, it's one of my favorite Nas songs.

Speaking of Nas, these 2 songs are underrated (although not many people have even heard them):

Nas' unreleased material* > Most rappers' albums

*Gangsta Tears isn't unreleased though, it's on the Exit Wounds soundtrack

That's a dope Nas track :y:
Nas could actually make up this thread by himself: Amongst Kings, Rise and Fall, Shootouts-he's got so many overlooked songs

I'll mention Jay-Z - Meet The Parents http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ5A2aKmZhI
Yes, Blueprint 2 is largely shit, but this track, wow. One of my favourite Just Blaze beats, and Jay's storytelling is sharper than ever on here

I'll also mention Where I'm From, by Jigga too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMIGEn_hcD4
Amazing Primo beat (Diddy used this beat on his new album, needless to say it's aged like fine wine) and Jay spits some of his hardest verses on here. I think this is as good as any track on Reasonable Doubt
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

I rarely see this Kanye song mentioned, and it's a crime because I think it ranks among his best:

People almost never mention I Gotcha when they talk about Lupe's best songs. I know its not but it deserves more praise then it gets.

One of my favorite artists ever. Amazing that he's been around for 30 years. Hip hop's first ever icon, who was the inspiration to almost every great MC that's ever come out.

The first complete hip hop artist ever as well. Perhaps the finest.

Also love this song by 50. It's my favorite song he's ever made, and it's a song many outside his core audience don't know about. Unlike almost every other hip hop song which deals with these issues, it's not fiction, it's all fact. It's touching because it brings back all those memories of all the things 50 went through here in Queens, how he overcame the impossible in terms of Supreme, his environment etc., and to see him now. My mom doesn't like 50 the rapper, but this song always brings a smile to her face.

Ghetto Story is a top 20 Lupe song that I never see brought up much. Great track, I have no idea why it was cut from F&L.

I love Outty 5000 and Coulda Been, not sure how the former is percieved by Lupe fans but I rarely see it brought up. Though I guess the beat made me really like the song, and Lupe's flow on it. Coulda Been is a top five Lupe song to me and is one of my favorite songs from him next to Hurt Me Soul. The whole concept and his rhyming in that song is in another level than it usually is.

I never see this Nas song brought up and his rhyming is phenomenal in it, he murders all three verses. He just blacks out

One Time 4 your mind is one of my favorite songs on illmatic, but everyone considers it the "worst" on illmatic, when I prefer it over Represent and It ain't hard to tell. I don't know I just find it a nice song to vibe too, plus he's on another level lyrically on it.

And I wouldn't call this song underrated, but more like the group being underrated. But Blackalicious' It's Going Down is great both lyrically, musically, flow wise. GOG is catchy as hell and is a great mc to introduce to fans new to the Hip Hop genre for it's general lack of melody. I can only safely say he's one of the few mcs who can probably go toe to toe with Eminem in terms of internals.

Becuase it wasn't as good as the rest of the album. I don't see it as one of his best

This is off topic, but I can't help but notice your taste in music is eerily similar to how mine was a few years back
You should check out Latyrx, not many people know of them, but if you like Blackalicious I think you'll like them (they were signed to the same record label as eachother)

Freestyle Fellowship (since you're an Ace fan you probably know these), Busdriver, Mr Lif and Juggaknots are a few others that I think would be right up your alley

I'll be sure to check them out :b: , do you mind me asking what your current music taste is like? And where do you get all these Hip Hop artists from, I just check this one guy's RYM account who has a very similar taste to yours, but has reviewed albums all the way from rap's inception till current day.
