Emo vs. Introspective

Postby GenePeer » Jul 17th, '11, 01:04

It's beginning to seem that Emo is used to undermine underground rap while Introspective is used to elevate mainstream (good) rap. Can someone tell me what the difference is?

ni.ggers (literally) and some w.iggers, alike, tend to call anything that isn't about getting money / shooting people / rubbing up on some bitch at a club and shawty gettin' crunk, 'emo'. Why? Who the fuck knows. 99% of them aren't intelligent enough to know the difference, anyhow.

Emo is some hardcore ass shit from the early 90's (great example is Circle Takes Square)

It's not crying bitches with long hair, and it isn't Joe budden

I can't believe how much the word has been twisted and deformed. I blame the parents

I got to agree with Devil'sAdvocate.. I don't like Joe Budden because he is a emo rapper. Not that there is anything wrong but just can't get into his music.

So if there is nothing wrong with being "emo" then why would that stop you from liking Joe Budden?

Not that I give a fuck but that's the stupidest thing that people use to undermine Joe Budden.

There isn't a difference between them. Introspective is "emotional hip-hop". Emo is the label for those who write the majority of their lyrics around being introspective.

In other words, it's the same difference between anybody using the words innovative/intelligent or pretentious. People use the respective adjective to enunciate whether or not they hate the artist in question.

People have labeled Eminem as Emo.

Yep, Satire has it right, Emo is meant to be a pejorative while Introspective is a euphemism for it I guess.

Personally I don't mind rappers being introspective, it's just when it becomes the fulcrum of their work that I get annoyed. Anything in excess annoys the shit out of me, even hardcore hip hop annoys me if it's redundant or shows no form of originality.

I'm not exactly a fan of rappers who are introspective though, and I hate when people try to give a rapper points for being introspective as if that makes them innately better than someone that isn't.

You are right and Joe Budden voice IS one of the reasons I can't enjoy him. I like his verses with Slaughterhouse and some other artists but most of his solo work is ehh.. bores me and feels like its the same song on a different beat.
