I refuse to accept the hate that Lighters get.

It's a good song imo and that'll never change, just because it sounds poppy or different doesn't take from that...

I hate it because:

- it attracts the same type of fans who love the likes of Bruno Mars, Britney Spears and Katy Perry. They are certified POP figures who make dumbed-down music to appeal to the mass market. I hate that Eminem could be put into the same category.

-Em used to be able to make commercial songs without being corny or enlisting the use of nauseatingly-corny pop figures like Bruno Mars to sing a hook. Which meant he could maintain his fanbase without necessarily attracting the kind of dickhead fan mentioned in point numero uno.

-There is the inevitable "omg I love Eminem, that "Lighters" song is so good!" from said fans, which also pisses me off because they have no idea or clue about the really deep, meaninful music he makes/used to make.

-The fact that he is now enlisting Bruno Mars for songs seriously makes me wonder if he has sold out. Interscope never made him do the song, the project was done under his own record label as far as I know and it's not like he needs to make any money. With the MMLP he was FORCED into making The Real Slim Shady, which he HATED (listen to The Way I Am for confirmation). There was none of that pressure for BME, he just chose to make a pop record (and not jus that, but THE poppiest-sounding, corniest record he has ever made) in order to sell and appeal to the fanbase aformentioned.

They're just a few of the reasons I can think of now without going into detail. But its 6:40am, I'm drunk and ain't been to bed yet. Peaceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

The only thing Em had going for him was the old tongue twisting flow he did in Bassmint Productions.

Deal with it, Em is a pop star, the biggest pop star. He never had just Hip-Hop fans. We cannot celebrate him for being the #1 on Facebook, for being the last decade's top seller, for having 2010's most successful album worldwide - but hate all the mainstream freaks being attracted by him. Kids love Eminem, Rap fans love Eminem, older people love Eminem, gangstas love Eminem, chicks love Eminem.

Can't see where Em's corny on Lighters. Bruno Mars? At least he's really able to sing, you cannot deny his talent. He had his own big hits (Just The Way You Are), and he had success collaborating with other artists (Billionaire).

I don't read Youtube comments, I'm not on Facebook. Very simple to avoid.

His record label is still under Interscope. And you know who had the idea with Mars? Royce. I don't see that big difference between Lighters and Love The Way You Lie or I Need A Doctor, just the hook is poppy.

Sorry dude but "deal with it" is such a poor argument. The fact is, in the past he had the ability to make singles that appealed to the mainstream but were still cutting edge and went against the grain. People recognised he was different and rebellious. He even said (want any quotes?) that he hated being put in the "pop" category himself - but I guess he should just "deal with it" too, right? lol. The difference now is, he is a willing participator in the pop genre, and "Lighters" is the clearest indication yet that Em cares less now about sacrificing his content in order to appeal to the mainstream. Just listen through "BME", "Lighters" is way, way outta place on the EP and it's there with one clear intent. I hate that he is releasing dumbed-down material in order to sell. Telling me to "deal with it" is almost nonsensical. I guess anything we don't like about Em we gotta "deal with"?

"Lighters" is corny. The hook is corny, the beat is corny, the content is corny. Ask the majority of users on this site. If you're gonna disagree then fair enough I'm not gonna be able to tell you you're wrong as it's your subjective opinion. Just like mine. Yea Bruno Mars can sing, so what? lol. That has nothing to do with the content of the song.

Yet you're posting in a thread which was created that way.

Dumping the blame on Royce isn't exactly fair. Royce didn't hold a gun to Eminem's head and make him do it; Em was just as much a willing participator.

He just stopped putting out funny celeb bashing songs, his new formula to promote shit is putting a famous pop artist on the hook. This will go on the next years for sure, it's his way to show he's more mature. Don't tell me you prefer We Made You to Lighters, just the lines where Royce talks about Em are worth it. And yes, there are some people thinking Lighters is out of place on the EP, but it's not my case, I don't give a fuck. I just judge the single song.

Those are probably the same people thinking Not Afraid is corny. Good sounding music often seems to be a bit corny.

Eminem agreed that it was a good idea and that it would sell to the mainstream fan. Therefore they both decided to make the song and release it as a single.

Dumping all the blame on Royce is a bitch move.

You lose.

I can honestly say I didnt hate We Made You as much as Lighters.

It seriously doesnt make you think anything less of the EP which, apart from Lighters, has a pretty steady, decent theme throughout? How do you judge an album or EP as a whole? Surely the transitions from song to song and the progression of certain themes or narratives have at least a little influence on how highly you regard a piece of work?

I didn't particularly think Not Afraid was too corny. A little yes, but I still liked it. To me, the content of it was a lot less cringeworthy and the hook is a lot more inspiring.
