Perceptions to Sell

Postby AbramIsaac » Aug 2nd, '11, 00:59

This is a song off of my EP, Citizen of Dystopia.

Perceptions to Sell is kind of like the first single, I suppose. It's an experiment in Psychedelic Hip-Hop. The album itself was inspired by novels on futuristic dystopian society, such as This Perfect Day and Brave New World.

If that description is too pretentious for you, fuck it we'll say the album is about getting a head full of mescaline and losing your mind. Drugs are interesting if fine literature is not. Anyway...

Perceptions to Sell

If it's a little too trippy for your tastes, I'll have something more up your alley in the next couple of songs. For those of you that like it, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

If this was entirely you, from the instruments to the vocals, I am very impressed. I love it. It's really replayable, and original as fuck especially on this forum. I'm checking your EP. The chorus is actually catchy as fuck, shit lol. Props man :y:

I like it, the music is good, but I do feel you put a little too much echo on your vocals. It works on some parts, on other parts it doesn't for me.

I see what you're trying to do here. It's not quite executed properly but, for anyone who is a fan of Aesop or the likes, it's easy to identify with.

As stated above, there's too much reverb on the overlays. That could be turned down and kept only where it actually fits. (like in the first verse what 'self' echoes all over the place) << It sounds really good there. and the actual echoes. It could possibly just be the volume of them, though.

Another thing I noticed is that your voice doesn't sound animated enough for this type of hip hop. It sounds a little flat. Not so much monotone (as I can sense the meaningful dullness in your voice; much like aes's), but just not animated enough. Your pitch doesn't fluctuate enough to sound as if it's riding with the instrumental. (if that makes any sense at all? haha)

Other than that, your flow is pretty good. Again, reminiscent of Aesop and JFB.

The instrumental fit perfectly, even if not panned / mixed 100% correctly lol. I still love it when people use all original instrumentals and such. So that's a plus. Nothing has to be perfect.

So yeah, man, this was good. Just work on animating your voice a little more (I'd listen to a None Shall Pass to get what I mean.. If you haven't already gotten it).

By the way, since you seem to be a fan of this type of music, have you ever checked out Jellyfish Brigade? They make this type of hip hop, and they're dope as shit. I posted a thread in HHD about them if you want to check it out. Here.

Thanks man, it is indeed all me. The drums took me something like an hour and a half if I remember correctly. The rest is guitar riffing. I'm glad you like it, if you want to hear snippets of the rest of the songs, the EP is on Amazon and it should be on iTunes. You don't have to buy it though, I'll eventually upload it here to TR.

Yeah, the vocals are a bit crazy with the effects. It used to be much more heavy with the distortion and what not, but thanks to some input from Zu I turned it down some. I meant it to be crazy psychedelic, but I can see what you mean when you say the echo is a little heavy.

It's funny you say that, because I didn't start listening to Aesop Rock until after I almost finished this album. Solace or Cole mentioned that one of the early songs sounded like his voice, so I eventually checked him out. I'm glad though that you hear something as cool as Aes' influence in this though. I'm definitely a fan.

None Shall Pass is good. I would say that level of vocal animation would be about right, and on some of the more recent songs, I am a little more animated. Not quite as animated as Labor Days, but moreso than this song. I'll check out JFB, for sure.

Sweet, I'll definitely download it when you do. Good luck with the release of the project. :y:

It must have been Coleon, since I never knew of Aesop until a couple months ago.
