Okay, I have a problem. When I listen to some songs I find that unless I concentrate on what is being said the words of the rap fade from my memory quick. Also, I can't detect internal rhyme schemes or flow by ear, or even if things are on beat. However, I can do all that on paper...so am I just retarded?
You're probably just listening more subconsciously and being dictated by the different sounds and melodies going on... hip-hop heads seem to listen to the genre more consciously because it's more of a competitive type of music than others so every little detail is often critiqued to the max. Just try to start listening to the music more consciously - purposely look out for the things you mentioned you don't really notice - and you'll pay attention to the lyrics, multi-rhymes and be able to notice whether someone is on-beat, much better.

Haha when I listen to songs I almost never pay attention to lyrics, can't even remember them after a minute. But that's cause as a producer I pay attention to the composition, mixing etc.
Yeah, I try to take it all in at once though, I do production and lyrics (not saying I'm good at lyrics because production is where my talents are) and I have been trying to improve lyrically so it has been hard transitioning from listen to compositions to EVERYTHING, I have to go over one song multiple times to take it all in, if I don't pay attention i miss it.
The first thing that I notice is always the production. On my first listen of an album, I mainly focus on the production. On the second one, I focus on the lyrics and content. On subsequent listens, everything just meshes together.
