Lowkey - Soundtrack to the Struggle [Album Out!]

Might as well give a cheeky review. It was an odd one to listen to with my excitement levels considering I'd heard most of the tracks.


It is amazing. The one worry I had was the variety of production and the timespan it which he made it would make it feel disjointed and not a whole product - however, the use of the skits and a decent structure meant this wasn't too much of an issue. In fact, it created a quite incredible experience, with mood switches from one track to the next making it seem quite powerful. That's not to see there isn't ANY problems - there is the odd fallback on cliches, most notably on Something Wonderful, there are some repetitive ideas, and his flow can become choppy at times.

I'll just comment on the unheard songs for now:

Dear England is the best and most accomplished track on the album, even beating Terrorist and Obama Nation which isn't easy. I was dissapointed with the ommision of Osama Nation but Dear England HAD to be there, it's so fitting to the album's tone and makes a nice switch from foreign policy to the UK. Hand On Your Gun is a very clever track - the hook seems completely out of place but is perfect really, coming across as sarcastic. Dreamers is a great song, works brilliant immediately after Something Wonderul - really like the hook.

Love the beat on We Will Rise, and it's pretty interesting lyrically. It's pretty similar in terms of content to the opening track, which, despite a shitty hook sample, opens the album pretty epicly - a bir hyperbolic but I think the album needed that tbh. Everything I Am seems slightly pointless, but that's not to say it's a bad song. Terrorist 2 is top class as well - Crazy Haze really needs to work on his delivery, but Lowkery smashes it and the structure and concept give it bonus points - definitely has lots of replay value.

Butterfly Effect is the ONLY bad song on the album. What on earth was he thinking with that hook? It doesn't sound like it really fits on the album, and his storytelling is pretty boring, and nothing really entices me to want to listen again. It's a real shame that this is there.

Overall, it's almost as good as I thought it would be. Some repetitive ideas on certain tracks and Butterfly Effect mean it's not perfect, but it's still an incredible album. I think I'm slightly underwhelmed because of how much of the album I'd heard. If I heard it after only hearing two or three tracks, I think I'd have been blown away. Give it time, and this one could be a classic.

So would you say it's the best album since the Eminem Show? I know it's a bit early to tell but..
