NEW STEVE SPAG - New Age Horror Scene (PROD. By TGB)

Postby Steve Spag » Dec 16th, '11, 14:47

Big thanks to TGB, aka Scrubz, for the beat, I'm loving this one! I wrote and recorded this yesterday, tried something different for the mixing so hopefully you agree that it sounds better than my last track, "Headache". Still not the best but learning more and more and having a fun time doing it. Any constructive feedback would be appreciated, much love to all my supporters and haters can keep hating!

Lyrics;
the light's flashing tonight just like a dance club
come on little hottie let's ride, now take your pants off
it's my damn song, yeah one you can chant on
you feel so good you feel rich like a mansion
the fans keep jumpin' from the floor to the ceiling
there's no way to conceal it, there's way too much screaming
you couldn't possibly think straight, your brain is like fish shaped
you're coming at me bro? i don't wanna fist play
i just do mixtapes, albums and ep's
i release cd's yearly and these people are leaching
tryin' to fuck my grind up, well get in line chumps
you don't wanna go there, you'll need 10 firetrucks
to put this flame out, i'm way too hot now
atomic warfare, i will burn the block down
if i go down then you're coming with me
it's a new age horror scene

there's bodies torn with their blood and guts out
i think about it and i can't get sleep
so many wars and the force for war's loud
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene
of course the course took a new route
these people leading us just ain't that sweet
i could've swore they broke all their oaths by now
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene

and i'm a patriot, so face it kids
you wanna take my rights? i might break your ribs
ak's, ar-15's and flashbangs
just like call of duty because i live in that fast lane
desensitized from the television
and the video games that you recommended
see it was all you, i was your prototype
society's throwaway but i was too overpriced
i came with some drawbacks, i want you to fall back
if you don't accept me i want you to pause that
and check my emotions 'cause i'm just like you
i struggle with good and bad and i see the light too
it's getting much clearer now, i know what to do next
i'll hide in the mountains once i get all these tunes in check
or maybe in budapest, somewhere so far away
with someone i care about, someone who got to escape all the pain

there's bodies torn with their blood and guts out
i think about it and i can't get sleep
so many wars and the force for war's loud
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene
of course the course took a new route
these people leading us just ain't that sweet
i could've swore they broke all their oaths by now
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene

"i recognize it will be hard to overcome decades of mistrust
but we will proceed with courage, rectitude, and resolve.
there will be many issues to discuss between our two countries
and we are willing to move forward without preconditions on the basis of mutual respect. but it is clear to all concerned that when it comes to nuclear weapons we have reached a decisive point. this is not simply about america's interests, it's about preventing a nuclear arms race in the middle east!"

and that's why i stay awake
trying to avoid and prevent world war 3
we can do it, i think
let's march down the streets and tell congress to cease
yeah parliament wrecks all government sucks
keep smothering people, we're fucking fed up
i'm not a fan of defeat, i got a plan that is sweet
a metaphorical battle on america's streets
from havana to greece everybody oppressed
yeah even in canada there's medical debts
the head of defence is on offensive, yo tell me the deal
instead of cover ups and lying you should try to be real
that would get you some votes, they're stuffin' the ballot box
it russia it shows but i guess putin just had it wrong
a political song, yeah, let's switch directions
before we're left permanently disconnected

there's bodies torn with their blood and guts out
i think about it and i can't get sleep
so many wars and the force for war's loud
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene
of course the course took a new route
these people leading us just ain't that sweet
i could've swore they broke all their oaths by now
it's a new age horror scene, new age horror scene

Hmm....
I found it pretty hard to understand you at times..

Maybe it's just me though..

Well, from what I could see technically, you did all the right things.
Stayed on-beat, flowed smoothly, no stretched syllables and decent delivery.
I think the vocal mix had a bit too much bass and not enough treble..
I know you probably wanted to stick to the flat EQ to blend with the music but sometimes it helps to have the EQ altered though.

Oh well, I really liked this track.
Headache got eclipsed.

I remembered you saying that Headache was just a demo and shit or something anyway..

Anyway dude, keep ripping shit up man.
Maybe think about what I said about the vocals, maybe widen them with compression and add treble so you don't have to worry about making them louder.

Thanks for the input dude, I used some compression on it but I'll run over it again later and see how it sounds. This will probably be on my next mixtape so I have time to go over and clean it up so I'll take what you said and try to apply it to the track.

there is something on the mixing that is not making you sound good
my guess it
- way too much reverb
- the volume is too loud
- there needs to be a mix differentiation from hook to verse

but I do agree with demaz in that everything is done perfectly, but there is something that just doesn't go well.

you need to add different stuff, and you still using the pro-tools effects wrongly man. also what mic are you using??... try getting yourself an NT2-A... you need very little mix with that one and hass a natural bass enhancer.

but yeah, work out the mixing man, the rest is great :y:

Thanks for the help Ax, doing the best I can. For this track, unlike the last one, I did do different effects for the hook and the verse, so they're definitely not the same, maybe similar though yeah, more likely, lol. I didn't use reverb or EQ either, only thing I did as far as mixing was the compression 'cause I don't know what works and what doesn't yet for the others but we're surely gonna find out soon!
:y:

Oh, and I'm using an AT2020 mic. a lot of producers said it was a good choice for a decent price, I'm digging it so far.

AT2020 is great, but I think you are losing the proximity effect...And it's making you sound muffled..
Do you have a dead cat on the microphone?
(I mean a windscreen lol..)

Sometimes that cuts off high frequency response.
Try using a pop filter instead and rap close to the mic' too.

I think the problem might be your hardware bro..Try experimenting a little bit before you record too.
I also heard that USB microphones give lower quality then analog ones..That might be a rumor but this song supports the theory.
I still think it's a mix problem though.

Sometimes it's a good idea to lay the vocals down first on one file, then apply the same effects to the whole block and then mix them or start tracking them.

That's the thrill of audio, you don't know what your gonna get until you try.

Anyway, peace out.

^^
Yeah I have the AT2020 but it's NOT USB, I made sure I got the direct plug (been warned about this). Also, I used a pop filter for this track, but not "Headache", I just got it a couple days ago, and I was standing close to the mic. so I take it it's just my mixing skills 'cause like I said, I'm still very new to that end of the table. I usually mix as I go, add compression on while I'm recording so I can get a rough sound and then I take it from there, but again, like I said, I only used compression on this track, NOTHING else, lol. I'll try some different shit for the next track like the EQ and such, thanks for the advice man! I actually already do what you mentioned, lay the effects on one block and then apply them to the rest, gives you a nice feel on how it will sound!

after listening,

idk man your mixing is still off. seems like you added too much reverb to your voice. it sounds like your in a concert hall, in the hook it was more evident but still noticeable throughout.

hook - had potential, was catchy and fit the track nice. lyrics of hook were good. like i said above really the mixing and voice just didnt fit for this one.

lyrics - had some good lines, had some corny ones, the whole "fire fighter" bit seemed a little mainstream type punch, but other than that it wasn't bad.

flow - your flow is nice, i mean you've been rapping for years, just not mixing. so it stands to reason why you have a handle on this category of rap.

beat choice - if you can ride it and like it all the power to ya. but was a little too dubstep/techno vibe for me. kind of reminded me of INAD with Dre and Em. it wasnt bad, just not my kind of beat.

in all I still like your old stuff, but its mainly cause of the mixing, your voice seems different than i remember too. idk but im not liking it as much, but thats not your fault. id give this track a 7/10 on listening value. 8.5/10 for "how good it is"

Well you got my input on this already. With the vocal mixing I think you should use graphic eq. It really brought my vocals to the next level making them crispier when eqed correctly.

Is that a pre-set in the EQ?

Smh@the dislikes on the video.

When you were talking in the beginning, you were a little too close to the mic. I can hear the pops/clicks/muffles. Also at "I think about it" at THink, you can hear the mic getting hit by the breath out your mouth. Just a note haha; no big deal. In all honesty, I used to be a big fan of your music. I don't want to be a dick and critique you, but after your work on Ready or Not, I didn't enjoy your music other than hearing you have artistic growth and experimenting. This song, New Age Horror Scene, is a step forward for you and this is something I really really enjoyed listening to. You sound very confident, your delivery is well done now, your flow is polished and slow. Like I said before, I thought the Obama sample was really dope. The hook was catchy. I could bump the shit out of this on some stereos, yadamean? Nice shit Spag, I enjoyed the mixing for what it is but when you've got it on lock you'll be a monster. Then you just gotta start producing beats and you're the real deal.

I appreciate the feed man, thanks for the honestly and I'm glad you're feeling this new track, hopefully it brings you back as a fan 'cause I got LOTS of stuff coming! I think you'll dig the new stuff I'm working on, I've changed a lot since I dropped my partner in the middle of the year, my last project "Tastes Like Success" was GARBAGE (quality wise), now that I'm back on track I feel a lot more in control. Plus, now that I'm mixing my own shit too it helps 'cause I know how I want my stuff to sound opposed to before when I had no real hand on it. Bringing back that shit that the people love!
