Hip Hop's Fans and Race

Postby Jdubem » Apr 12th, '12, 20:24

I just had an argument with someone about this. In this day in age are there more fans of hip hop who are white or black?

I was willing to guess that despite most rappers being black that there might actually be more fans of the genre who are white. Cant really back this up as it is pretty difficult to measure, but what do you all think?

Yeah it defnitely started out that way, but now it has become so mainstream and globalized that everyone listens to it regardless of race. Id still say though that if you are black then you are probably more likely to be a fan of hip hop then if you are white atleast in the US. Dont get me wrong though Im only talking on average. I have two black friends who dont really like hip hop at all and im white and like it a lot.

Only reason I got on this train of thought is cuz I was arguing with my other friend (who is Lebanese and a big French Montana fan) and he was trying to tell me that French's most popular song Shot Caller by itself was more well known/popular than is Hopsin as a rapper period with all his songs. He tried to say that it was true since the song is all over the radio and on tv all the time. He told me something about how its been in the top ten videos on BET for awhile now and so more people must know about it. I told him that only means its more popular with the audience of BET and that Hopsin's audience as whole doesnt listen to BET or even MTV as much so it was unfair to compare their popularity in that way. He went on to say that basically BET's audience is a better representation of the majority of hip hop fans as a whole as there are more black people who listen to hip hop. I told him I wouldnt bet on it and that there could easily be more fans of hip hop that are white nowadays. Maybe im being somewhat presumptious, but I do know one thing. There are becoming more and more fans of hip hop of other races now whereas the popularity of hip hop among black people has already grown close to its peak. The thing is that in the U.S. where hip hop is most popular there is a much greater percentage of white people and now hispanic people then black people so it would not surprise me one bit if that makes it so there are more white fans overall.

Damn too much haha

In my country, I think there's more white fans, since my country is mainly white.

I'd say it's still a bit more popular with black people (e.g. maybe 60% of black people like it and 50% of white people), but I think in countries like the US, UK, most of Europe, as it's mainly white people, it means more hip hop fans are white now.

As most people have alluded to. Probably more white people listen to it. But it is more popular with black people.

Take the U.S for example, roughly about 75% white and 12% black.

For arguement's sake, lets say a majority of that 12% of black people listen to hip hop. It only takes a small percentage of white people to listen to it to at least match the same amount of black people.

So yes, it's likely more white people listen to it now BUT proportionately, the number of black people listening to Hip Hop easily outweigh the number of white people.
