Australian Hip Hop

Postby Squiggles123 » Apr 23rd, '12, 06:57

Ok, so basically I am from australia and we have a rapidly growing underground hip hop scene here which has a big following. I was wondering first up if anyone had heard much Aussie Hip Hop and if not who is open to it as I would love to use this thread to post some great aussie tracks if anyone is interested.

People diss the accent and say it doesn't sound right, which if thats true then theres some rappers who don't sound as aussie as others.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts.

Running On Air is in my top 10.

Don't mind hilltop hoods, they opened for eminem and Wayne in Australia and they were really good live.

Glad to hear your a big fan of Bliss N Eso, they are good! They have a song with Xzibit on there new album too and it's pretty good.

How do I post videos etc in my posts? Am I unable to until i've posted more on the forum?

Some great recommendations are:

Horrorshow (mostly deep songs, great production)
Seth Sentry (This guy is awesome, only has an LP out and features in other artists songs but he is a huge pothead and video game nerd, raps about that stuff and gets a bit more deep)
Drapht (Australias probably second most famous artist, bit nasally but if you can get past that he's awesome)
Hilltop Hoods (If you know any aussie hip hop, then you've got to know of Hilltop Hoods, done some songs with notable american artists and most famous australian hip hop)
Illy (Some great political songs)
360 (Originally very comic MC but more recently known for deep stuff and going mainstream/to a bit of electric pop, he's in the grindtime and got beef battle leagues and is quite popular on the internet, great old mxtapes over mostly american beats, good way to ease in)
Funkoars (Similar style to the hilltop hoods)
Bam Bam (Good mixtape out, don't know too much about him though)
Dialectrix (Quite a fast paced rapper, love his stuff)
The Herd (Also quite political group)
Pez Quite political and light hearted but album was very "conspiracy focused"

Would love to hear from some people about any tracks they may listen to and when I can I shall post some of my favourite videos in this thread.

I saw the hoods live recently, they were awesome but the venue wasn't great so the sound was a bit hard to hear.

I was saying in another thread that I really wish I could have gone to that Eminem gig in Melbourne but unfortunately I live in perth and the tickets weren't cheap let alone flights. Also seth sentry is supporting Public Enemy in australia. Chuck D loves aussie hip hop based on an interview I heard with him a while ago.

I used to talk to a rapper from NSW.

He was good, and I didn't even notice his accent. This was years ago, we were both kids, like 14 maybe. I had heard he was doing some radio interviews a year or two after that, but I don't know what happened to him.

Other than that, no.
