Definitely the internet, artists don't sell even half the units they used to and they gotta tour extensively to even make decent money.

Ya, in the 80s the underground could make money to live on off of a really good mixtape. Tech n9ne and other underground kings would probably be selling more than triple and would have achieved much more mainstream relevance. There also wouldnt be labels forcing their rappers to fit in neatly with the pop mainstream (though there would still be some pressure).
