Lupe Fiasco vs. Pete Rock

Postby GenePeer » May 22nd, '12, 02:37

Have you heard Lupe's single "Around My Way" for Food & Liquor II? If not, check it out in that other thread, it's just been posted. This is just a post for the drama I'm seeing on Twitter, kinda amusing. So the single has the same saxophone melody as Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You (TROY)", and this triggers Pete Rock to go on a rant on Twitter.

Snippet's from Pete Rock's Twitter wrote:No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made outta anguish and pain. When it's like that it should not be touched by no one!

It's so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP?

This business can be so lame, sometimes I make beats blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back and still these cats can't be original too.

I'm not flattered @ all. Dat shit is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his fuckin self. Smh

I think lupe is a great artist, I'm that angry with him but it's a major label idea. I can feel it.

Shit got even more interesting when Kno (from the CunninLynguists) came to the rescue. He points out that a similar remix by Lupe was released 3 years ago and no one complained.

Snippets from Kno's Twitter wrote:This Pete Rock & Lupe thing already happened 3 years ago and nobody said anything. http://t.co/2qdtC1QR

It's hard to side with Pete Rock when this J.R. Rotem abomination exists w/ Pete as a co-writer meaning it was cleared. http://dai.ly/nt97wG

I don't know who owns the publishing, but Lupe got nothing on Mann singing about his baby momma when it comes to disrespecting "T.R.O.Y."

So why does Pete allow to be credited on Mann's song, but starts complaining about Lupe? It seems very disingenuous given that Mann's is one of the most generic songs out there [I hadn't heard it before today, and will never play it again].

That's not the end of it. Pete Rock himself sampled Tom Scott's "Today" for the saxophone. Lupe could have sampled "Today" too and not Pete, so does he really have a right to complain? The whole situations's a little hypocritical on Pete's part. What's your take on the situation?

Man, people should just enjoy the song for what it is, and it is fucking dope. I prefer '90s Hip-Hop myself, but it's really annoying how those same fans get pissed, like it was their record or something. I agree that maybe Lupe shouldn't have had that sample redone for him, because it's signature for Pete Rock, but Pete Rock shouldn't be so mad about it either. If nothing else, this will bring more people to the original song, and everybody knows that T.R.O.Y. is the real deal when it comes to that sample, so it's not like Pete can lose anything.

Apparently not. Pete Rock was supposed to clear up the situation in a better way. Check that interview, it's dope.

Lol, yeah, and I'm kinda glad that this situation escalated. Now all the Hip-Hop "purists" will get mad and hop on Pete's dick.
