"Em beat" sound: good or bad?

Postby Amaranthine » May 26th, '12, 02:47

Do you think it's good or bad that we can usually tell when a beat was produced by Em? Is it a sign of a lack of creativity, or just his signature sound/style?

i think its a mark of a good but not "great" producer. It works for him very well though... its almost like Nas having the same sound for 2 decades. It keeps your core fanbase happy but doesnt expand your reach.

Definitely.

Like when you hear a Dre beat, you know it's Dre's beat, still doesn't make it any less amazing.

I dont think thats true. I find Dre to have a much wider range in his production sound (i consider even his co-production like The Recipe, I need a doctor as part of his repertoire). I actually find people like Dj Premier more stagnant and thats why some of Premier's music sounds dated. Dre has always evolved with time and done it well.

I agree with this.

Yes, it's a good thing. But there's always a special feeling when an Em beat doesn't sound like an Em beat. For example, Legendary.

I think it's a good thing, as it means he has a stamp / a sound.

And I totally disagree with this notion that 'they all sound the same'... as...

How the fcuk does "The Way I Am" sound like "Square Dance", or "Without Me" like "'Till I Collapse"... or "Lose Yourself" like "No Apologies"...

They all sound very different to my ears, and all have very memorable, unique melodies.

Which is more than I can say for most other rap producers.
