Need more albums like this: Post-Rap

Postby FreeSpeech » May 30th, '12, 01:40

Basically, hiphop-rooted albums that don't rely on rapping as the cornerstone and rather focus on the artistry, production, innovation, etc.

Any recommendations?

I'd rather have a Shakespeare than a Mozart in the rap game.

The lyricism on all these albums is excellent (with Drake being debatable so I won't bother). Frank Ocean is one of the best modern songwriters. I'm just saying, the albums don't RELY on the rapping to be good. The rapping is still great (or singing).

Most do. Personally, I want both. Why just want one? Both were great at what they did, both are historical figures, and both were able to emotionally affect people as well. :y:

I don't really know of any albums like that tbh tho, but I'm up for checking 'em out.

I guess you can include 808's & Heartbreak in here as well.

Maybe some A$AP Rocky? (Not a fan at all personally, but I've gotten that "innovative" vibe from his music). Some Cudi too.
"This dude doing this interview wants me to spin a few,
Lyrics while I tie my tennis shoes in the nude
A romantic interlude in a livin’ room,
In an inner tube with a dude with a bit of lube
Fuck that I’m sniffin’ glue, sippin' gin & juice,
And a little bit of paint thinner with my dinner too,
You better pay me for my bars like your rent is due,
Now hurry up and finish dude before I finish you."

Nah, Lupe and ASAP Rocky still are basically just rappers. But yeah Cudi definitely.

Other post-rap albums:

Ehhhh kind of just backpacker rap stuff, nothing really innovative.

Not saying it's bad, but it's basically just Atmosphere type ish.

This is extremely moronic and backwards ass thinking that does nothing but causes an unecessary shift in the genre, forcing people to choose between beats or lyricsm rapping. Also you're really dumb if you think beats/production should take a backseat to rapping.

I think he is saying the opposite.

Anyway although I am more a fan of the lyrical component in rap, I can appreciate good artists. However most of the albums you mentioned are not ground breaking at all. I didn't mind MBDTF, although an overrated album it is artistically good and I can see why people like it.

I agree with the guy who said he'd rather have a Shakespeare for Rap than a Mozart.

One of the things that separates Rap from other genres is that it is supposed to be more lyrical than other music. This point often gets lost with all the shitty rap that has terrible lyrics, but this was one of the original intentions of the genre and should be seen as a desirable quality which can distinguish rap from other music. Music that is sung relies more heavily on melody and less on lyrics. In rap you are supposed to say something that is more meaningul.

Obviously this isnt always done, but think about it. When something is being said (rapped) as opposed to sung then the focus of it is naturally going to be more on the lyrics and less on the music surrounding it. That is why what Eminem did in his prime was pure hip hop. The beats went well with his rapping. Not so much the other way around. His rapping is what carried the songs and stuck out and I honestly prefer it that way. If I wanted just wanted to listen to the best all around music with the best instrumentals and harmony than rap is not the place I would be. Mozart is more for other genres while a Shakespeare like rapper can be what separates hip hop from the rest.

"Ugh the nerve of this guy responding to my scrambled mess of a post on a public message board, get the pitchforks men he's attacking us with mean words and logic".

Everything I typed up in my prior post perfectly applied to what I responded, youre saying that lyricism>beats, I'm saying that's stupid and contageous bankrupt logic that does nothing but spreads the myth that beats aren't important. And yes that moronic sentiment is still prevalent in a lot of circles, I'm not saying one's more important than the other, I'm just saying that neither should take a backseat to either.
