I'm interested in Hip Hop. Problem is that there are too many artists and too many songs. I have no idea where to start.
I'd like to know more, but it's like climbing a mountain and I just started at the bottom.

So, here it is. I'm asking for suggestions. Please, don't just write "Tech Nine" as Tech's discography is huge. Write down or post songs/albums/mixtapes, so I can check it out on YouTube. If I like it, I'll buy.

Thanks.

Here are some of my favorite artists and groups, and one album plus song per each.

Eminem - The Slim Shady LP (Role Model, but you already know this album so...)
Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous (Put It On)
Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor (Hurt Me Soul)
Kanye West - Late Registration (Diamonds From Sierra Leone, but you probably know this one too)
Nas - Illmatic (The World Is Yours), or if you want something "newer": Stillmatic (Got Ur Self A Gun)
2Pac - Me Against The World (So Many Tearz)
Common - Be (Be Intro)
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory (Scenario)

And lol@name.

long list of "classics"

Why the FUCK would you do that? Let me ask you a question, if someone wanted to read a novel would you recommend MacBeth or you would recommend The Da Vinci Code? If And if "the foundations" are all that matters why are there only 90's RAPPERS on it? Early 80's? 70's? Hell in the 60's there was fucking hip-hop but why not mention that? Fuck outta here with that snobish shit.

Now, since you want to BUY these albums, i would recommend you sample all the new guys/ albums coming out by checking out free shit on the mixtape circuit. Go on Datpiff for the official download (written with a sponsored) or just google them. Makes you find value for money faster.

Yes, Start with Tech N9ne, he's AMAZING.
Recommended album. All 6's and 7's

Kendrick Lamar is very popular and i (think) he's mixtape is free so you should check it out
Recommended-Section 80

The most creative artist in hip-hop now is Kanye West so you should probably start with him-
Recommended- Graduation
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Nas is a LEGEND and this album changes the pace with a mix of reggae so try it
Recommended - Distant Relatives

This one is a selfish choice but i LOVE it. Mike Shinoda (from Linkin Park) formed a group Fort Minor and they have an album- The Rising Tied

Since you like Eminem, EVERYTHING by him is a must listen (whether good or bad) so SSLP, MMLP, TES, Encore, Relapse and Recovery. Add Re-up, 8 mile soundtrack, D12 world, Devils night etc.

One good way of listening to hip-hop is to look at the grammys for Rap album of the year and see if artists you like had albums nominated. Not necessarily the best albums of the year but they will be good.
Songs of the year

Tech N9ne- Gods, Ft Krizz Kaliko and Kutt Calhoun.

Thanks to all who replied. At least I have an idea now where to start.

@momentsgolden
I know Fort Minor, well, I knew Linkin Park before that, but I listened to "Remember the Name". Liked it. But I prefer Mike Shinoda with Linkin Park, I must admit. He just doesn't strike me that much as an MC. He's got some nice lyrics, but nothing that puts me in awe. I liked what he did on Meteora, though and Fort Minor is good. I don't deny that. Just not... Damn, I don't know how to explain without sounding like an idiot.

Get these albums my friend, and then thank me for introducing you to them:

Image

Game - Doctor's Advocate: If you want a west coast album with production out of this world.

Image

Talib Kweli - Quality: Mix of great lyricism, positive content, and fantastic production.

Image

Common -The Dreamer The Believer: It has an uplifting tone overall and Common delivery kills it every time.

Oh... your list is piece of shit. You recommend ONLY new albums, I don't know what for. You really think it's better to listen to... Graduation ( :facepalm2 ) than "Done By The Forces Of Nature" for example... Get the fuck outta here with your 60's hip hop ( :confusion: ) and with your shitty list.

As I've become a member of an Eminem forum, I think mentioning him would be futile...

Please, guys, don't kill each other over this... Thanks for all the suggetions. Now all I need is enough time to actually listen to everything.
