Better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy? I'm not sure.. But it's damn close.

By the way, his performance on Jimmy Fallon was terrific.

You guys always overrate MBDTF. Great album? Yes. Classic album? Probably. Best in the last 2 years? No.

Anyway, lets not get carried away, it's a good album but you can't say it influenced any genre. It's been out for not even a day, some songs are innovative but nothing is absolutely ground breaking and revolutionary, I know a couple of underground R&B artists that are doing more unique work than Frank. One I'd name is BJ the Chicago Kid, however Frank Ocean has star power and he has done his thing with this album. Let's just not get carried away. And I still believe Section.80 > MBDTF, maybe it's just me.

He can't? Have you ever heard Sing For The Moment by Eminem? That sampled a revolutionary song that was utilized outside of its own genre. He is an RnB artist, but the dude can also rap and has appeared with numerous hip-hop artists.. including two of the four biggest names in hip-hop. He can definitely affect everything across the board.

Maybe my wording was chose poorly. I think Frank Ocean's songwriting can be a revolution in music with how strong and vivid his writing is. BJ The Chicago Kid is great, but I still don't think his voice or songwriting skills can match Frank Ocean. channel ORANGE presented Frank Ocean unraveling his love life with men, women, dealing with those feelings, and he even placed himself in the shoes of a spoiled rich kid and created a lament for a drug addict and he then unleashes a diatribe of the war on drugs. Hell, the guy compared the ruler Cleopatra to a modern day prostitute on the album.

Is it revolutionary? No. Not yet. Can it be and inspire others to step outside of the box without being afraid of the grumbles and disdain of generic fans, generic music, and lyrics that lack substance and beautiful metaphors and imagery? Helll fucking yes it could. If it doesn't, I don't really care. As a music fan, this album certainly has changed my view on a few things and has brought a new outlook to the intertwinding genres of hip-hop, rap, RnB, and alternative.

You are correct, but this album isn't hip hop thus this album WON'T revolutionize hip hop. Sure it has a few hip hop songs, but out of those Pink Matter was the only amazing one. I think the song with Earl was the only somewhat low point of the album for me. That might be different for others, that's just my opinion. He is definitely doing something different, and he's doing it good regard less of our different stand points. And this doesn't mean he can't have an influence in hip-hop, but this album definitely won't.

Frank Ocean has a better voice than BJ the Chicago Kid for sure, there is no doubt about that (not saying BJ has a bad voice). However, BJ the Chicago Kid approaches a track with a completely unique style, it's a little more innovative than Frank Ocean but harder to get into. That's where Frank Ocean has found the balance between innovation and attractiveness. I think that's amazing, and only a few can do that. That doesn't change the fact that I think BJ the Chicago Kid's music is better, it's just an opinion that many will probably disagree with and I don't look down on them if they do. All of that in mind, channel ORANGE was an amazing product and a step in the right direction for music in the mainstream away from dance hits back into an art form. That's a great thing this album could achieve if it becomes massive.

I pretty much agree with this. I was just confused and pissed with your original wording because I felt that this would become a project that would spiral out of control and get praise it may or may not deserve for achievements it may or may not achieve. I want this album to do good, but I won't call it revolutionary until it is. Forrest Gump is probably the most original song on this album, mainly because that is some subject matter that hasn't even been attempted and recorded. That, in my opinion, is the only groundbreaking song on this album. However, that's not to take away from the other songs. The others range from amazing to pretty good, the only down side being Super Rich Kids.
slimfan94 wrote:You guys always overrate MBDTF. Great album? Yes. Classic album? Probably. Best in the last 2 years? No.
I agree, it's a classic album but it's not like it was God's gift to the earth like you all make it out to be. I believe it has been ripped a new ass hole by Section.80, Control System, Habits & Contradictions, Camp, Torches, Making Mirrors, Pineapple Now-Laters, Overly Dedicated, Some Nights, parts of Watch the Throne, and channel ORANGE. That's my opinion, do I care if you disagree? No. People have different tastes in music and I'm willing to accept that. That list is cross genre by the way.

Edit: By the way, I am surprised at how much of a fan base Frank Ocean has. I didn't know it was this massive, I mean he is going to be huge judging by how many likes his album got in one day on iTunes. He got 1,000 more likes than Chris Brown's, an established artist, new album that has been out for a week in one day. That's amazing shit. Also, to put to rest any doubts of Kanye West being one of the most dick rode artists of this generation: "Frank Ocean really just shocked me with this album. Album of the year with Cruel Summer." That's the top comment on iTunes. I mean the album (Cruel Summer) hasn't even came out yet and it's already being called the best album of this year? That's just a bunch of shit in my opinion.

As someone who is a pretty big fan of Nostalgia Ultra, can somebody explain to me what the fuck is so genius about Forrest Gump? Im trying to get into this album but I'm finding it difficult so far. I'll give it a proper listen this week though, and hopefully I'll change my opinion.

It's different subject matter, that's the only groundbreaking part about it. However, it isn't amazingly innovative and it doesn't have a completely new, unique sound. It's overrated because he came out of the closet, as is the rest of the album already. That being said it's a good album, but that song's subject matter is the only groundbreaking material on the entire project. Even then, it could have been executed better, it's not thought provoking. It's more of a gay love song with an amazingly chill vibe. Don't hate people, I'm just being honest. The project is already being overrated like an Eminem or Kanye album.

Edit: Also, to everyone asking for a download link, just go buy it on iTunes. The music's good enough, and you won't be wasting money.

I think it better than Nas's album, and yeah, album of the week. However, Nas and Frank are in basically two different genres, so it's a hard comparison. Frank only does hip hop on the side of his singing. He should just ditch hip hop because he's much better at singing, and that's not to say he's a bad rapper. He's just a better alternative/R&B/pop artists. Yes, he is somewhat a pop artist on some tracks, don't have a heart attack because that's not necessarily bad unless he's not being unique. Also, this album deserves some of the praise it is receiving but not all of it. It's being grossly overrated due to him coming out of the closet. Anyway, I really like Lost, Pyramids, Bad Religion (disagree with the message however), Pink Matter, and Forrest Gump (I like the vibe and singing, but I can't relate to the subject matter so I might not be playing it as long as some of the other tracks.) Anyway, I'd say it's a 8.5/10, and I'd rate Nas as a 8/10.

I haven't even given Life Is Good a listen... but based on "Accident Murderers" I'm expecting a 8/10, nothing Illmatic though.
