Eminem got gigantic from being the poster boy of ZERO compromise. Em's first two albums are incredible, PURE top to bottom works of art, and they are what made him huge.

Rappers who use the excuse of them trying to 'widen their audience' or reach more with their music with these shitty hooks and concepts / watered-down singles make no sense. The point which strikes me most of all is: why would you want people who don't really like what you do, or get what you do, or who only would like you due to X chorus... listen to your music anyway...

Unless it's for money then, trying to market to people who don't like the primary core of what you do makes absolutely no sense at all. It should be Darwinian - do what you do and whoever likes it, likes it, it's natural selection. If what you naturally do isn't popular then so be it, but changing it to be popular when the people who like the popular version don't like / get what you really do is, moronic.
