That's a pretty lame and stereotypical excuse people back pedal on.
That wasn't really a substantial comment from BigBoss to really back pedal ON, tbh.
Religions support the act of violence or force when absolutely necessary, like during the mass exodus of Jews from Egypt and subsequently, the number of violent battles with tribes along the way.
Like the Holocaust? That was absolutely necessary? The bombing of abortion clinics? All the people who've said "God told me too" or "It was just God's plan" after they've gotten caught?
Unfortunately, people in the past and present use religion as a shield to commit such acts. The Crusades...doing something in the name of religion doesn't mean it's religion's doing. That's the same logic as blaming an artist for a school shooting, "Oh well, he LISTENED to Marylin Manson so we'll blame him". They're parallel scenarios.
Uhh, actually yes it does. If you're doing something in the name of it, then that means it affected you so deeply to commit such acts in it's name. The shooters never went around screaming "MARYLIN!!!!!"... They did it because they were fucked up in the head. However religion is a different beast. It's a lifestyle. It's a way of thinking. They might listen to Manson but ultimately it was God that made them do these things, not the music they listened to.
It's also humorous that you're using "uprooting native tribes and homes" as a religion based issue. Converting them, sure that's fine - but they already had a belief system in their own type of 'god' so in essence, that just chalked one off the board (giving atheists one less religion to hate..you're welcome). But the nations that uncovered North America would have uprooted anything exactly the same way whether religion was around or not...
Okay, I see your point. I was actually thinking of the converting of them. Didn't they uproot and/or kill any of those who didn't convert though? I'm quite sure that's what Columbus did when he found the natives.
Lastly, the indoctrination of children through threats of eternal torment...growing up in a predominately religious city and in a Catholic school with Catholic teachers that daily practiced prayer and taught religion lessons, I can guarantee you not a single child was scared or threatened by anything they said. I know I wasn't and I also know all my friends weren't affected in any way. Not to mention teachers were never aggressive with the teachings, the religious component in school was about 30 minutes of a 7 hour day - hardly enough to get a point across. You and everyone else is heavily blowing that out of proportion.
The point is religion gets them when they're young and they don't have the chance to think for themselves. They're literally brought up from birth to believe THIS is the way the world is and if you think different you're going to Hell. That's not willful. That's brain washing and indoctrination. And I'm not talking about just school. I'm talking about churches and shit. I was brought up going to church every Sunday since I could remember and being told in sunday school and congregation THIS (the Bible) is how the world is. And you're going to Hell if you don't think so. Luckily I had an older brother who broke free of that shit and by the time I was 12-13 I could honestly think for myself and he showed me other possibilities. I didn't know what an atheist was until then because I honest to God (pun intended) I couldn't believe there wasn't another lifestyle other than the one I was brought up in which was Lutheran.
But just for hypothetical purposes, when/if you have children...how will you raise them? As atheists? What happens if they decide to practice a religion when they're older?I'm actually just asking out of curiosity, I don't have a point lol.
Which ties in to my above... I will let my children grow up free of religion UNTIL they are old enough to think for themselves. Then I'll let them choose their belief system and I will love them no matter what they choose, religious or atheist. They're my children.

Lol, can't you just say that about any organized chant?

eh not really. the only other "chant" i can think of off the top would be like at sporting events, but that has momentum, humor, or fun involved. Hearing people recite a prayer or whatever in church sounds like a cult because it's so mono toned, unenthusiastic and drawn out. Again, just sayin
