Of all time? No.

Right now? Yes. I've hated pretty much everything he's done since Recovery, and parts of Recovery. I've got to the point where I'm not even that interested in any new music he may release anymore, which is a shame. I think Lighters was the turning point.

I still have faith that he CAN make some great stuff because he has had his moments since Relapse. I just hate the direction he's choosing for the majority of his new music.

I don't think my question came out right. I was referring to currently because you said Kanye was currently a much better artist than Em. Then you said Em was the best rapper ever. Do you still think he is or do you think it's someone else (at the moment)? That's what I was trying to get at.

I still think if you are measuring skill, Eminem is certainly the best I have ever heard. I do think there are rappers who make better music than him these days though and Kanye is one of them. MBDTF is a far better album than Recovery and it's a disgrace that it wasn't nominated for AOTY.

Nothing comes close to touching MMLP though.

Slug (from Atmosphere) consistently releasing great music since 1997 (something that Eminem cannot do from 99-now) while turning down major record deal offers so they could be DIY. Slug is much more creative than Eminem as well and I only think that 1999-2003 Eminem is better than Slug. But looking at it over the full course of time Slug completely batters Em.

This kinda post, I find to be pretty dumb.

I think we think there's so many better rappers nowadays (I'm not denying it) because we have access to them all. Hopsin isn't on the shelves, he's not on TV, but he's a pretty big artist right now. Most think he's pretty good, and arguably better than current Eminem (example). If he were doing the same sort of thing back through 94-2002, we wouldn't have known. Internet wasn't as big as it is back then as now.

There were probably rappers up-to-par with Em that were unheard of, and probably still are.

Hell, look at Tech N9ne. He's been slept on his entire career pretty much until last year.

And you might have a case there, but do you know for a fact that everyone in the underground back then wasn't as good as Eminem? No. You don't. And if you say "underground doesn't count", then who is better than Em in the mainstream today?

Someone being better than peak Eminem is pretty much inconceivable to me. Nobody in the world has heard every underground rapper there is...but you can get a sense for what is and isn't out there. It's just inductive reasoning.

The lyricism in 94-02 in rap wasn't the same as it is today. You listen to the KOTD guys...the Eminem influence is blatant every time you hear them rhyming 8-syllable multis every bar. And these guys, despite their ability to craft ridiculously long multis, don't have the variety of patterns Eminem did, nor the concept writing ability or delivery. If they did, more of them would probably be able to make music worth listening to.
