I do a lot of drawings and I can't echo the above. It's a great start, but you have a long way to go.

Firstly it's great to see that the proportions are solid. This is one of the things most people that even attempt to draw struggle with, and it really underpins the realism of a drawing.

Your main problems lie in the tone of the pieces. You have solid outlines and neutral shades of dull grey which doesn't look realistic at all. Pencil is really not a good medium for drawing realistically. It's great for blending to create smooth, light surfaces (like skin) but try and experiment with charcoal to create vivid blacks where there is shadow. Merging the two has great effects. Look up J D Hillberry for an idea.
If you are using photographs as a source, change them to grayscale and up the contrast and the brightness to gauge an idea of how your drawing could look.

Keep at it. Drawing is a wonderful hobby and you are off to a good start.

I hope my comment is more helpful than those above. :y:

Oh yes this does help, thank for the critic, and pencil is all I have to draw with for now, I'm saving up money so I can buy better materials hopefully this would help the quality of my work, and the judgment and advice you've given me help me as well

Menzo wrote:The drawings got better as they went down. The third one is the best and actually one of my favourites since he's returned lol.

yes Menzo, I think the third is my best one, more detail and a bit more realistic than the rest

thanks you guys, very helpful :-)

The third one is very good.

Regarding the Pencils, I found J D Hillberry's book 'Drawing Realistic Pictures in Detail' (or something to that liking) very helpful indeed. It's useful to see how other artist's implement the various pencils we have at hand.

For really dark shades, try and look into getting a General's 9XXB. It's richly black like charcoal, but has the properties of graphite mixed with carbon, so it is easy and unmessy to work with.

If you do any more pictures, please post them up! :y:

I will look that book up, and thanks for everything and yes I will post more when I make new ones. You have so much knowledge about this, do you draw? or paint?

Amadeo wrote:Did you draw this from memory, or were you looking at photographs to aid you?

The former is very impressive, the latter not so much.

Only the first drawing was memory, I was advised to sketch instead, so I would look up pics on my brothers iphone and sketch the drawing from the phone
