Tech 9 and Crooked I

Postby Willy » Sep 7th, '12, 23:57

have tricked millions of lil' hip hop hipsters that think they understand the meaning of "lyrical" into blindly supporting their shit. It is NOT hard to write like Tech N9ne. At all. Really, dead serious. The fact that some people think he's the GOAT blows my mind. Sorry if some of that was offensive, I just wanted you to feel my pain. Feel the torment people put me through when they praise an average ass verse. You feel it yet?

Why they are bad: Let me make this clear, I am not talking about flow or delivery. Those are mostly subjective, and I think both of them are good in that area. I am talking about their lyrics. They sacrifice far too much to rhyme well. The reason Eminem's da goat is because he was able to rhyme at a masterful level without sacrificing the intelligibility of his lyrics. It often sounded conversational, you heard the lyrics and the dope rhymes just fell in place. The shit was coherent as fuck, and is extremely difficult to replicate. There are so many layers to good writing and he was a master at it. On the other hand...

Tech and Crooked force the shit out of their rhymes. It doesn't even have to make sense half the time, and they know it, and they don't give a shit because people just fucking eat it up.

Then I let you witness shit when it hit the ceiling
The niggas willing to give the listeners the sickest feeling
Like mixing some Benadryl and penicillin

^That is a bunch of bullshit. Like, you guys seriously think that's good? That is incredibly lazy writing, or incredibly good writing for an idiot. Before you get absorbed into "woah, look at all those rhymes..." Fucking STOP. Just STOP. What is he saying?! What the hell is he trying to portray?? Listen for the meaning. Like GOT DAMN people. Anyone can string together a bunch of rhyming gibberish. And Crooked and Tech do it, all the damn time.

And yeah you could say it's all stylistic, listen to the atmosphere they are creating it's like abstract art all the shit doesn't have to blah blah blah. Whatever, it would be a lot easier to appreciate their music if I wasn't able to write the same type of shit when I was fifteen.

It's like, at a certain level that shit just doesn't impress you anymore. I hear a Tech or Crooked verse and know immediately what it's going to sound like. Then they rap. Then I'm right.

So, here's my question to yall: Why are they good? Maybe I haven't heard enough, post me some of their illest shit and prove me wrong. I want to discover dopeness, but can't help my natural inclination to be unimpressed when something sub-par is passed off as greatness. PROVE ME WRONG! :b:

Yo thanks Geno. I checked the track out and for the most part enjoyed it. But I think a lot of you guys are letting Tech's flow/voice/character taint your objectivity in terms of the lyrics.

"This ring got me a top notch, straight hot fox, we sought rocks
And the Ewok Slot, was caught, got dropped two, playing hopscotch
On the block, ought not twat plot, yo for hops knot I brought dots"

Like, so he got a really hot girl and something about a harry pussy and hopscotch on the block, not a vagina plan, dots? I seriously don't know what half of this means, and I think it's a perfect example of what I was saying. Granted, I could be missing something, but I think my case still stands.

Crooked doesn't even rhyme that much, yet he had an AMAZING verse. Do you agree?

Neither of them are bad. Both are pretty good.
"I take yall diss as endearment - I love it when I hear it
Maybe words offensive - free speech I don't fear it
Maybe music can take us to a place so atmospheric
Beyond our greatest imagination, illuminatin' experience
If we open our ears and close our inhibitions, it's clear"

It was definitely better than his Loud Noises verse :P I thought it was actually pretty cool, but nothing mind blowing. And to be honest, I'm kind of biased against emotional songs. I don't really like listening to them, they kinda bore me, plus I hate being sad.. However, I also think people on this board are biased toward emotional shit. Just because dude is saying something heartfelt doesn't automatically make it better. Always try to look at things objectively, even if shit gets sad as fuck.

And I wasn't directing that to you by any means, and Crooked was good on this track, for sure. Only "emo" rapper I like is Sadistik, and that isn't really because of his lyrics, but the atmosphere on his tracks. They have an awesome feel to them that like instantly puts you in this weird mood.

I find it pretty ironic you're nitpicking Tech N9ne and Crooked for stringing along rhyme schemes with little to no intention of making sense when that's exactly what Sadistik does.

Btw, what do you think of Virginia Woolf? I love it. Off topic, I know.

Virginia Woolf was cool. Liked it. And yeah I can see why people say that about Sadistik, but I don't care. I love his music because of the atmosphere. I'm not hating on people listening to an artist, but just know why. Be honest with yourself.

For example, I love the movie White Chicks. I'm sure any movie critic would immediately write me off as an idiot. The thing is, I'm not claiming White Chicks is something it's not. I'm not saying it's the GOAT of comedies. I just find it funny because I rarely watch movies, but when I do I like surface level cheap laughs. I realize it's a character flaw, and I'm down with it.

And BTW for Sadistik, check this track out. Fucking tight, sounds beautiful and there's really nothing like it:
