"Eminem may be a gifted technical emcee but his content sux"

Postby EminemInsider » Sep 26th, '12, 00:48

I see this all the time, and it's really baffling.

Rakim made an entire career out of rapping about rapping, but Eminem is the one with "no content?"

"All he does is rap about his wife and kid."

First of all, operating under this false claim...yeah, the horror of Eminem rapping about his personal life. He needs to rap more about the streetz and how he's a hardcore thug. Oh wait, he did that in his pill days.

And then, of course, you have the simple fact that Eminem is as content-driven as anyone. The same people whining about Eminem's content are listening to Generic Underground Emcee #84192 humping the eighth notes in a monotone rhyming about nothing in particular.

Or, they're putting on some emo abstract Sadistik song and marveling over the "imageryyyy."

Meanwhile, Eminem has songs about being broke, songs about being bullied in school, songs about the influence of his music on kids, songs about censorship, songs about media hypocrisy and sensationalism, songs about the impact of his skin color on how he is portrayed and perceived, songs about drug use, and endless stories.

But Eminem's got no content.

Well, I really shouldn't be surprised. These "rill hip hawp is all underground, son" fucks pretty much invariably also believe that 9/11 was an inside job and discuss the "Illumini." They also smoke tons of weed and pimp whatever Democratic candidate is running for President.

I don't think the people who try to make this tired argument have heard more than three Eminem songs ever.

I find the whole idea of 'good' or 'bad' content fucking stupid. Unless it's something totally moronic or you repeat the same idea every song, it's pretty much all about the execution. Not what you say, it's how you say it (that's cliche as fuck, but whatever)

Either way, Em's covered a crazy amount of topics when you think about it. More so than any other rapper by some distance.

I feel the same way about people who claim all 2pac did was rhyme "nigga" and "trigga" and yell Thug Life. 2pac had more skill than some people nowadays think.

This. Oh by the way you forgot his mom. So that's three topics. I kid of course. The frustrating thing for us actual Em fans is that his singles are a shitty sample of what his work actually is.

But honestly, I don't understand the problem with his content even if he IS only rapping about a few things. Most SONGS in GENERAL are about relationships. Falling in love, breakups... that's about it. And partying. Maybe a bit of generic "stick it to the man" rebellion thrown in. That's ABOUT it. So even if he does have his main themes, so does every singer/rapper/band ever. Em gets a ridiculous amount of flack for things that shouldn't even be valid complaints in the first place (this could be debated, I realize). You know what I mean? Maroon 5's first (main) album was called "Songs About Jane" and no one was like, "all they did was talk about Jane!" as a reason to dislike it... anyway.

I always thought Drug Ballad and Drips are great examples that it is all about execution.

Amadeo wrote:My favorite "real underground hip hawp" Illuminati track is End of Days by that moron Vinnie Paz. It features every classic cliche. An eeeeeeeeeerie audio/voice clip at the start...a spoooooky piano loop, and brilliant lyrics like this:

"There's fluoride in the water, but nobody know that/It's also a prominent ingredient in Prozac"

LOL. Actually, it's a pretty well-documented fact, retard. Oh nooooes, da government is trying to fix our teeth! FUCK 'EM!!

He also doesn't know that chemical compounds do not have the same properties as their individual components, because he's another pseudo-scientific dipshit.

Oh noes...da government sells us products with SALT, which is SODIUM CHLORIDE...and SODIUM is deadly by itself!!!!!!

  :worship:

And yeah the content thing is bullshit, if you look at Hip-Hop as a whole, every subject matter has been covered, and it's more about how you do it and how do you put your ideas/points together. Nas has been talking the same shit for 20 years yet I still love it, because he executes it with awesomeness and a great choice of words/metaphors.

If you take the Fort Minor song - Right Now, the points they make have been said a million times but the creativity behind the execution is fucking awesome and that's what makes it lovely.

Em was probably a better storyteller than Nas tbh.

The main argument for Nas is that his concepts were better / more abstract. Not to say this isn't a good thing. But it comes down to execution.

In the debate people usually come to the consensus that Em executes his stories better. See Kim, Bonnie and Clyde, Brain Damage.

But Eminem was hard as fuck in his first 2 albums! He was sort of gangster because he would talk about killing people. Now he's just technical, he should battle in epic rap battles of history. He's more like a robot now, less like a person.
