Why Jay-Z is the best MC of all time.

Postby Blu » Oct 25th, '12, 23:28

Let's get it out of the way, many people here seem to dislike Jay. Or maybe it's just what I see. But, I plan on having rational discussion. So, without further ado, let me present to you all why Jay-Z is the best MC of all time.

Image

Consistency: Jay came out in 1996 with his debut Reasonable Doubt, and ever since then he has dropped one bad album. That's right, Kingdom Come was certainly not up to par with his other albums. People might call The Blueprint 3 a "poppy" album, but it's not really a bad album. It has a few gems on there. Anyways, the point I'm getting at is that Jay might release one sub-par album, but then strikes back with GREAT albums.

Image

Popularity: Jay's tied with Eminem on this one...there's no doubt that these figures are the most popular people in all of the world. There isn't a single person that DOESN'T know who Jay-Z is. Not to mention the various business ventures he's a part of. He's not a businessman, he's a business...man!

Image

Lyricism: I'll admit, there are a ton of rappers out there that know how to "rhyme great," but what does that even mean anymore? If anyone picked up a pencil and pad, and decided to become dedicated to writing nonsense bars filled with multis, then they'd definitely accomplish that. But, it's a whole other challenge to actually write something. I'll take some examples from Watch The Throne since that's the most recent album he's been on:

Jay-Z wrote:I tried to teach niggas how to be kings
And all they ever wanted to be was soldiers
So the love is gone 'til blood is drawn
So we no longer wear the same uniform
Fuck you squares, the circle got smaller
The castle got bigger, the walls got taller
And truth be told after all that said
Niggas still got love for you

Jay-Z wrote:Cocaine seats, all white like I got the whole thing bleached
Drug dealer chic, I’m wondering if a thug’s prayers reach
Is Pious pious cause God loves pious?
Socrates asked whose bias do y'all seek?
All for Plato, screech
I’m out here balling, I know y'all hear my sneaks
Jesus was a carpenter, Yeezy he laid beats
Hova flow the Holy Ghost, get the hell up out your seats, preach

When was the last time you heard someone spit bars like that? Lyrics with hidden context and significance. Reading the lyrics on paper won't make it seem like a big deal, not until you learn what the lyrics really mean. Kinda like why a lot of people like Pac, because he spits from the "heart."

So in the end, is it reasonable to call Jay-Z the best MC of all time?

Agree? Disagree? Feel free to comment why!

He is one of the best, not the best though. Good thread anyway. I'll give a better answer later.

Rakim has all that minus the popularity, the same with Nas and they're better than Jay

No, I'm sorry. Also his last solo album was pretty horrible.

Just a thing..

This is also the definition of inconsistency. Eminem and Jay are two great artists but they fail at that.

a great mc, still not the best.

I can see eminem being more consitent than Jay

It's not imrpessive at all imo, trying to put fucking great lyrics with hidden context is dope to me, and I think Eminem can do it better

Btw, great post :y:

the only proof you need is his verse on Clique. he's 40 fucking years old and laid the best verse on the whole album (besides 2Chainz on Mercy :shifty: )... on the real tho, yall seem to forget the fact that he can come up with all that shit in his head without writing a single rhyme down. its incredible

Umm no. You can't just decide what albums you think are good and let that be the end of it. Generally, Jay-Z is considered to have 3 great albums and the rest range from bad-pretty good. That is not consistent at all.

Popularity: Jay's tied with Eminem on this one...there's no doubt that these figures are the most popular people in all of the world. There isn't a single person that DOESN'T know who Jay-Z is. That's great and all but it has nothing to do with him being the best rapper.

Lyricism: I'll admit, there are a ton of rappers out there that know how to "rhyme great," but what does that even mean anymore? If anyone picked up a pencil and pad, and decided to become dedicated to writing nonsense bars filled with multis, then they'd definitely accomplish that. And it's a whole other challenge to actually write something and still use great rhymes and be technically sound, something Jay-Z does not do.

When was the last time you heard someone spit bars like that? Lyrics with hidden context and significance. Reading the lyrics on paper won't make it seem like a big deal, not until you learn what the lyrics really mean. Kinda like why a lot of people like Pac, because he spits from the "heart."

Literally every day. There are tons of rappers that can match that lyrically/surpass it.

This was a pretty poor attempt at an argument of a goat :coffee:

Scarface is the best ever to me, if I had to pick. Jay-Z is up there. He definitely has a nice discography.

But really, to say someone is the best isn't fair. There's about 15 artists that could have a legitimate argument.
