Just Listening to "Stan"...

Postby EminemBase » Nov 18th, '12, 23:08

I got the 'behind the boards' (2007) interview on and "Stan" is currently playing; what a complete work of art. Total genius. It's been SO insanely overplayed over the years, the amount of times I've heard it, but to hear it like this randomly, after not, for a while, it's so brilliant.

I completely agree. I honestly believe it is his best song, even better than Lose Yourself, Rock Bottom, Renegade, SFTM, etc.
it really is a perfect song.

Except for the line where he says "He likes you more than I do", which doesn't make sense after he says he's his 'biggest fan'. But, Stan's a psychopath, so can't expect consistency.

Yeah and Eminem messed up a line "I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it". When he performs it live he says "I hope you go to sleep and you dream about it". I don't think either really take anything at all away from the song.

I always thought that just showed that Stan was becoming less of a fan of Em as Em continued blowing him off.

And I think the one about sleeping is supposed to be that way, because he's nuts. It's not supposed to make sense.

That doesn't explain why he changes the line when he performs it live.

Maybe he means he hopes he has nightmares about it, so he stays awake because of them? Or not, just a thought...

I consider Stan to be one of his top three best songs, if not his best.

Isn't that actually the genius of the song? The impeccable character sketching of an obsessed fanatic who goes ahead and calls his brother an even bigger fan than himself, leaving a subtle foreground of his impact (alluding to his own level of fanaticism) on his brother?
All these clumsiness add to the brilliance of the song. Another one would be calling the song "in the air of the night".
By the way, don't you think the song could have been much more darker and haunting if there was no last verse?

Amadeo wrote:Stan didn't literally mean he was Eminem's biggest fan. Hyperbole.

The "go to sleep" line is an undeniable error, though.

Well that's plausible, but in a song like this where every line is so blatant and so important to the next one, where he basically wastes none... and when Stan is actually being quite literal as he's psychotically obsessive, so is sincere in his extremity, I think it was a bit sloppy. Sounds so glaring to me.

The basic plot is simple, but the way he added elements of drama is what makes this song great. Genius.

Its quite intriguingly ironic how stans reminisce 10 years ago and start hyping up subpar songs. Like someone on here just said "my mom" and "dejavu" we're almost classic shady. Really? Stan was simply about a young teen aka Devon sawa who had a man crush on eminem and was too deep into everything that he ended up killing himself. Em was full of himself and quite arrogant to think kids were that obsessed. Also his rhyme schemes on Stan were subpar.
