Its quite intriguingly ironic how stans reminisce 10 years ago and start hyping up subpar songs. Like someone on here just said "my mom" and "dejavu" we're almost classic shady. Really? Stan was simply about a young teen aka Devon sawa who had a man crush on eminem and was too deep into everything that he ended up killing himself. Em was full of himself and quite arrogant to think kids were that obsessed. Also his rhyme schemes on Stan were subpar.

Sort of the on the topic of arrogance as Hopsinshadie pointed out...I feel as if Em had quite the ego when he was younger, considering MMLP was only his sophomore album. Realistically speaking, nobody would be going crazy over a rapper like that. Unless of course, that person had mental problems that conflicted with their natural way of thinking. But, it was never known that Stan had these problems, right?

I'm not necessarily saying that Eminem being so full of himself was a bad thing, I'm just pointing out that his arrogance might have fueled him. He just wanted to make everyone else feel inferior, he wanted everyone to see that he had fans going crazy over him, dying over him.

I just think one of the main problems now is that Em thinks of himself on the same level as other mainstream rappers. He's neither above or below, he's right in the middle, with them.

Of course, this is all one huge theory.

I hope you're all joking when you say this song has anything to do with Em's ego. Jesus fucking christ. In NO way is this song Em wanting "everyone to see that he had fangs going crazy over him".

This song essentially drives home the point of the album. Through hyperbole in pretty much every song on the album, Em was pretty much making fun of everyone who took his Slim Shady antics so seriously in the most outrageous way possible. "See everything you say is real, and I respect you cuz you tell it". Em is essentially jabbing at everyone who saw his crazy Slim Shady shit as stuff he actually believes in. Stan taking his music so seriously and literally and as a result killing himself and his girlfriend is basically Em saying, through the most outrageous way possible, people take my shit too fucking literally. It's music, it's art.

This is exactly what Em has said in interviews about Stan.

Of course, we all know the song is about Eminem telling people his actions depicted in songs were just for show, but who's to say that the song didn't have a bit of influence from his ego? When you're in the rap game, you'd wanna showcase yourself as being the best, so don't be so quick to disregard my theory.

It's an extremely tenuous argument to say Stan is fueled by his ego.

And it's just not really understanding Stan OR clutching at straws.

That shows he's a visionary.

Em has always been one step ahead. When he made The Marshall Mathers LP, the world was listening yet, but he anticipated they would be, and he was right.

Similarly, "Stan" seems to get more and more resonant as time goes on, as society gets more and more obsessed with celebrities, it's a masterpiece and forward-thinking song.

Not just the song Stan, but his older songs/albums as well.

I guess I'm really reaching into it all.

I actually think Em shows incredible empathy in "Stan", just being able to write three verses from the point of view of a fan who worships the ground he walks on, when he's still uncomfortable with his level of fame and the idea that some people see him like that.
