One way you can look at it, is that when you say "oh you fucking faggot" you can be directing this at a friend ( who may or may not be homosexual) but when you say "oh you fucking n*ggER" its pretty much directed at that particular social group.

I think there are much worse things. I'm not gay or black, so I can't be totally sure of that, but sexuality and ethnicity isn't something one has any control over. I am white, and if/when I am called a cracker/white boy/wigged I don't take offense in the slightest. I am white, so that's really just a description of me. Same with faggot and nigger, gays are gay and blacks are black, but so what? It is the people who use those slurs that are offended by it, not anyone else. So I am ok with it in the sense that I think personal attacks specific to a person (like targeting their low intelligence or bad odor or anything like that) is actually more offensive because it is attacking the specific person and not a generalized group.

Am I okay with the words being used as an insult.. here's the thing, there is reason that these words exist. Language is just our attempt at transferring our thoughts with sounds. Sometimes the words "Faggot" and "N.gger" are used to portray someone's prejudice. Am I okay with the words being used as an insult? Doesn't Matter. If these words didn't exist do you think that people with prejudice would just disappear ? A new word would be created to cater to the demand.

Also, faggot is not always used as an insult. Period. Here are some definitions:

Language CHANGES over time. Meanings are constantly shifting. Words are being created, remembered, and forgotten. And even then, every time someone thinks of a word, the individual has a slightly different interpretation than someone else, and so on and so on. And guess what, the individuals interpretation changes as well. Universal definitions for words simply don't exist.

You would have better luck arguing for the sound of a baby's cry having a universal definition, but even then I'm sure there's a psychopath that interprets the noise as "chop me up and eat me".
