Do skits add to an album or get in the way?

Postby the real slim shady » Dec 16th, '12, 19:58

There are two ways of looking at skits, one is that they can link up an album and turn it into more of a story than a collection of songs, and also they can be funny or a nice break from the music.

An example would be in The Eminem Show, The Kiss skit is the introduction to Soldier but is also featured in the Superman video. That kind of links up the tracks, and then the Steve Berman skit is more of a break from the music.

But then on the other hand there are some albums that just have unrelated skits (cant think of an example while im writing this, possibly the School Spirit / Lil Jimmy Skits in The College Dropout but i can see how they go along with the rest of the album) that just get in the way of the music and can ruin the feel of an album.

Anyway.. i was talking with someone about this and they said people should just not include skits on albums, i disagreed and said that sometimes theyre good..

So basically do the people of TR like skits in general or not? Do they add to an album and make it more interesting to listen to or do they just get in the way of the music?
I am aware that this thread probably already has been made, several times.

I think skits make listening to an album from beginning to end more enjoyable, tbh.

It depends on the album. If it's a concept album and the skits fit in the concept then I would say they add to an album.

I'd rather have the skit be included in the song.

It depends on the album I guess. Concept albums should have the skit be a part of the song, because it's probably best that you listen to the skit to help move the story forward.

The one bad thing about Kendrick's album is how all the skits are in the song... I'll be bumping one of his songs at work and then all of a sudden his homie is leaving him a voice mail and shit. Skits should very rarely be included in a song IMO.

Skits on an album can be great... however some of Em's skits aren't always good. There is at least one skit on each Em album that just gets in the way.

Skits add to the albums, IMO. They often connect songs and make them flow more. Recovery was really lacking them.

tbh skits are annoying where they're included within the track ... like aquemini for example, I even tried to look up an edited version of aquemini without the skits but I couldn't find it.

the skits before soldier and the way i am are the only ones i dont skip. I'd say that 1st time you listen an album the skits are good (if they're good at all) but after that they just get in the way.
