Because Blu, no one knows what it means. It's provocative, it gets the people going.

Right but without rhyming and flow you're just talking. When you rhyme words with rhythm (flow) you are suddenly rapping. I'd argue that they are just as important if not more important than the words themselves when we're talking about melody.

Exactly, but we're not talking about melody, we're talking about lyricism. Poets and spoken word artists can be lyrical without rhyming or having flow.

You can be lyrical without metaphors.

Your reasoning is bad for the whole "rhyming isn't a part of lyricism".

Rhyming words is a part of lyricism.

He's not even talking about metaphors though, he's just talking about making sense, period. His argument is that Tech sacrifices making any kind of sense at all for the sake of rhyming. In some cases, I think that's a valid viewpoint.

I agree with this, I don't think Tech is an amazing lyricist.

I don't agree with the statement "rhyming isn't a part of lyricism".

And class' reasoning for that statement is bad.

We've had this discussion in a different thread anyway.

I'll try and make it as simple as possible

Lyricism: what the words mean
Rhyming: how much the words sound alike

Those are two different things. They affect each other but they are two separate entities

Tech N9ne- Great rhymer, poor lyricist

He's a perfect example of the difference

Well then we have different definitions of lyricism.

And you've changed your original definition of lyricism from the previous thread, lol.

My definition is : What you are saying and how you are saying it.

Yeah but how you are saying it doesn't include if you're saying it rhymes or not

Yes it does you idiot.

And "how you are saying it" also includes using metaphors/double entendres/aliteration etc.

No I'm sorry but it does not. Take some time to make Hip-Hop and then you'll the difference, for now you're just stuck in the view point of a listener .

You are actually an idiot if you are serious.

I'm not sure if you genuinely think writing/rearranging sentences to make words rhyme is not a part of "how you are writing" the lyrics.

Well yeah it's how you write the lyrics, but making your flow is how you write the lyrics and we've already established that isn't a part of lyricism.

"How you say it" is how you are getting your message across. Were you creative? Did you you have good word choice? Were you using similes and metaphors? Were you descriptive and painting a picture in the listeners head? Were you showing how you feel instead of stating how you feel? It's not, how many syllables did you get to sound alike in each line? That has nothing to do with what you're actually saying.

No.

You can change your flow without changing the lyrics.

You can not change your rhymes without changing the lyrics.

(unless you change pronunciation of words, which I concede can be a category that is separated from lyricism).

I'm happy to agree to disagree because we have already covered the exact same points in the other thread and are going in circles..?
