Billboard : GKMC is the best debut album since 2004

Vibe (a 6 pages article): Is Good Kid Maad City the best debut album since illmatic ?
- Good Kid delivers in more ways than one
- incredible rhymes
- Kendrick may save Detox
- Like Nas, he's carrying an entire coast on his back
- Kendrick could be the most gifted newschool rapper

HipHopDX : The West Coast Illmatic: good kid, m.A.A.d city & The Evolution of Hip Hop Storytelling

Kendrick Lamar: 2012's Biggest Newcomer Snuck Up On Us.
Success of good kid, m.A.A.d city couldn't have been predicted.

Hiphopdx compared GKMC to illmatic, billboard said it was the best debut album since 2004 and now mtv is sure that gkmc changed the game :coffee:

"Balanced by sound storytelling, progressive instrumentals and creative radio standouts, GKMC proves that hip-hop doesn't have to go pop to be successful."

"Beyond earning the Compton rapper a gold plaque, Kendrick's first shot will now be the standard by which all coming hip-hop debuts will be measured. It's the type of benchmark hit by artists like Nas and 50 Cent during their rookie campaigns. It's the type of distinction that cannot be predicted, and because of his effort, Kendrick Lamar now stands unequivocally as music's newcomer of the year."

At 25 years old, Lamar told an engaging tale over the course of 12 cohesive tracks — a feat that hasn't even been attempted by rap's top storytellers like Slick Rick, the Notorious B.I.G. or Ghostface Killah. Kendrick's execution was so perfect that the youngster will have to walk on water if he wants to top good kid his next time out. Until then, the rap rookie can go into the new year knowing he changed the game.

Your thoughts ??

Ehh.. Not to take anything away from Kendrick..

But once the 'media' takes to something the rest follow suit. I fuckin hate that shit.

yep true but mtv is pretty right, every new album is automatically compared to GKMC on the internet. (critics, forums, fans etc)
They didn't rly say that gkmc changed the game like the chronic did but according to the article, it changed the game because it's like the new standard.

Hell yeah. Agreed completely.

I wonder how Kendrick feels knowing he outshone nearly every rapper that dropped something this year :flutter:

Na its good something finally dropped and things have higher standards to be judged against these days.

I think they may be over shooting or judging prematurely though.

I just hate critics and the media, in general, I guess. So ignorant.

He can do it ! ahah imagine, 3 classic albums in a row ... :flutter:

GKMC already influenced a few albums imo. Jesus piece was a concept album (game never did that in the past...) and the structure of LongLiveASAP is slightly reminiscent of GKMC.
I fucking hope that Eminem will release a concept album as great as gkmc :flutter:

How has it changed the game lmao?

Plenty of successful rap albums show that you don't need to 'go pop' to be successful. Em's first three, some of Pac's albums, most of Kanye's albums...

The article said it sets new standards for future debut albums.

More of a standard than The Slim Shady LP set?

There's plenty of examples of brilliant, classic, dark and daring debut albums, I would hardly say this has 'changed the game'. It sets a good example though.

"Kendrick redefining the meaning of hip-hop" : you heard it first here, it will be the title of the next rapradar's article :shifty:

this is the best mainstream debut since illmatic, to be honest.

The album isn't overrated, even famous rock or jazz's magazine gave kdot the album of the year. (he even topped end year lists of anti-hiphop magazines  )
This is just like Eminem, some people think he is incredible and some other ppl think he's just an ok rapper.
This is all about opinions I guess.

What makes an album a classic ? In my opinion, a classic album has to be accepted first and as a whole, has to excell at certain attributes of rap music.
A lot of ppl think that gkmc is flawless and you don't need to look further than Jesus Piece for direct evidence of GKMC's influence. Since when did The Game start making concept albums ? Even the structure of LongLiveASAP is slightly reminiscent of GKMC and everyone's been coming out with humble material for a few months.

The media didn't make him famous... a lot of ppl were talking shit about him but they changed their mind and went crazy as fuck when they heard the first leaks of the album.
