I'm kinda happy he didn't go big, don't people to get the wrong picture of him.

What about the people who gave his CD a spin?

They made Rapgenius's 100 best songs of 2012 list. They're 25 with Goodbye and Our House and Hammerdance are on the list too.

The hook is bombastic though. Maybe as an american you would like it, idk.

But yeah, I feel you like my stepfather felt me.

I think it's a brilliant concept track, well executed.

How many "best of" lists did Eyedea make it on to? Probably not many, if any at all, and I'm sure there's guys like Class and Blu who would argue that he's one of the best rappers.

Yeah but the point is, they (SH + YW) didn't deserve to either.

Deserved to it be on it for making a half-baked compromise of an album with barely any original concepts, a lack of cohesion and hardly any stand-out moments... ?

Nah, their lyricism is enough to call this album one of the best of 2012 in rap music and i don't even give a fuck about that "compromise". These days 90% of mainstream albums sounds like this and production is GREAT on this album.

But the lyricism isn't even that good on it :confusion:

For all the talk about them being amazing rappers... they all give very standard performances on here. The only verses that stick in my mind are a few Crooked I ones, and that's only for the odd line... most of the punchlines, humour attempts or attempts to sound clever are incredibly corny.

There's really nothing outstanding or original about hardly any of the verses, song concepts, hooks or anything. And you're right about 90% of mainstream rap albums sounding this way, that's the problem. But worse than that, it's not even cohesive / consistent on this album, it's just a huge mess. Try and think of a melody of one of the beats in your head...

Pretty hard right?

Where as, think of classic albums, think of 2001, think of the "Forgot About Dre" beat. Good production sticks in your mind and has a discernible style and tune to it; the beats on WTOH are like Recovery - they're hugely noisy and over-produced, nothing memorable about them and they often ruin the song by crowding and drowning the vocals.

EminemBase I agree about the beats except Hammer Dance. It's impossible to forget that beat. Especially if you have good headphones lol

Yeah but the point is, they (SH + YW) didn't deserve to either.

I think that's more opinionated (especially when the lists are usually created by just a few people).

But it's rarely coincidental.

We all like to dismiss critical consensus or defend our own taste with "it's just opinion", but that's completely taken as read, there's no need to state it and it's moot to point it out. What else could it be? any expression of subjective analysis is opinion.

But, there's reasons why The Godfather is often at the top or near the top of ANY 'top 100 movies ever' lists, and there's reasons why Illmatic is on 'top hip-hop albums ever' lists... AND, there's reasons why Radioactive and WTOH are not. It is 'all opinion', but the opinions add up to something and are rooted in reasoning that determines a quality in standard and originality.
