This.
I guess in rap you're supposed to be some hardened thug that has no feelings.
It's because it's been done to death, the same way, over and over again.
Rap about what you want to rap about, just do it in an interesting way. It's like Immortal Technique said about gangsta rap--if you want to rap about drugs, then cool, rap about drugs. Just do it in an interesting way. Talk about how it feels to sell crack to a pregnant woman, or to be selling the same drugs that your parents are hooked on. Talk about losing a shipment and having your connection threaten to kill you over it.
That's my issue with love songs. Generally, they're uninspired, unoriginal, and just uninteresting. Love is the strongest emotion one could possibly feel--as a result, it motivates even untalented people to express that emotion in artistic ways. The only problem with all of this subpar content is that it dilutes the subject genre-wide.
It's all about what you're into though, at the end of the day. To summarize my rant, I don't think rappers should be hardened thugs, but if they're going to do a subject that's been done so many times that it could never be counted, they better do it in a unique and interesting way.
