This is brought up a lot. No way was he chasing the beats, but he doesn't have that flow that blends perfectly with them (like on TES) either.

He is just too hard on himself. He flows brilliantly on MMLP

Honestly it kind of irritates me that he refers to his work as "the first record" or "the second record" like they're just jobs he completed.

Post-TES interview when he was lyrically constipated, as I've said before.

He'd just got done shitting out his When the Music Stops verse. Subconsciously, he was trying to justify the fact that his flow was drifting towards "basic."

The first thing any rapper does is ride the beat in generic fashion. Eminem started out doing that when he was a teenager.

Anyone who can keep tempo can ride a beat...which is virtually anyone in the world.

Just out of interest, which songs on The Eminem Show do you feel have great flow and which songs have the basic flow that foreshadow some of his later Like Toy Soldiers-esque work?

Aside from When the Music Stops, Square Dance and Business have 2003ish flows. Square Dance especially. There's some foreshadowing to this style in Cleaning Out My Closet, but that comes across as more experimental in nature with rapping continuous bars.

I'd say Sing For the Moment and Hailie's Song could've fit on MMLP. Drips as well. I also like what he does in Say What You Say and Say Goodbye to Hollywood. In Till I Collapse, his voice had deepened but you have to have rare ability to pull off that flow.
