Yeah, I think Yelawolf is one of those artists that isn't for everyone, but as soon as you "get" him, you tend to really like what he does.

Agreed.

And as Rev said, he grows on you quick when you really sit down and check him out.
Ive said it before, I thought he was a gimmicky ass cuntface whiteboy wanna be crazy rapper at first. I wasnt impressed at all. But when I sat down with some liqour and listened to 0-60 top to bottom, boy did he grow on me.
Nowdays I cant see why people dont like him, only to remember I used to feel the same way.

Big up to Rev for repping a Yela tshirt know lol :flower:

I know he was something special when he did the Bob Dylan sample for Juelz Santana's Mixing Up the Medicine. Something clicked with me.

I would say B.o.B is similar to Yela; not in how they sound, as they sound starkly different obviously, but they're both from the south, both have broad musical appreciation of many sounds and genres (and consistently mix all that appreciation together) and both can sing as well as rap and create layered and melodic hooks. Both very imaginative and multi-talented too... I think either of them could make a song in pretty much any genre, very well.

I knew Yela was special right away though. I never liked "Pop the Trunk" much, it's done well but the concept is just corny; but I listened to Trunk Muzik and was like 'wow', and then listened to all his other mixtapes and he's got a 'true artist' quality about him, the likes of Em and Kurt Cobain... has a 'do or die' rock-and-roll spirit, integrity and a vivid imagination. Roll on Love Story.

So glad he'd determined to make a classic now too. Almost everybody else seems content to 'just put some more stuff out', and they put some effort in sometimes but don't seem too concerned about legacy or creating something truly special, they just keep 'spitting fire and bringing in that paper maiyne (ugh)', everything he's said lately gives me a lot of hope for his next moves.

PS. Psycho White is badass.

Angsty?

I'm not sure you can categorize much of anything Yelawolf does as angsty.

Eh actually I loved Yelawolf before Eminem had even heard of him. And my posts exist on this forum documenting that, my love for Yela's music has zero to do with Em.

i heard pop the trunk before he was signed or anything and thought he was okay. when he officially signed to shady i looked up the rest of his stuff and loved it. if yela was dropped from the label or even if he had a beef with em, his music would still be great.

Yeah, Arena Rap is probably my favorite release from Yelawolf, I just wish it were longer. His Shady Records affiliation doesn't have much to do with it, in fact, I think he'd be better off without it sometimes.

The think I love about Yela is that we have never seen anyone like him. I don't think there has every been a redneck rapper before and thats another achievement of Yela. Guys will doubt him because he's white but add the fact he's white and he's a redneck and the haters will give him no confidence. Just shows how much work he has to put in.

There have been redneck rappers before...even successful ones.

Bubba Sparxxx is a good example, probably the best one. Kid Rock eventually kind of transitioned into that too, before becoming a full blown country singer. Yelawolf is much more artistic and interesting than either of those guys though.

I will admit, Bubba Sparxxx's Deliverance has some good shit on it...
