Which up & coming artist will be the most successful in 2013

Postby King Lance » Jan 17th, '13, 08:42

2009/2010 = Drake (and Nicki Minaj ?)
2011 = J. cole
2012 = Kendrick Lamar

So who will be the next one to be as successful as them ?
A$ap is expected to sell 130,000 to 140,000 copies but I can see Ab-Soul being more successful & hyped than him in 2013.

What's your guess ?

Weren't Drake and J.Cole both signed in 2009? And didn't A$ap sign a $3 million dollar deal with Sony? These guys aren't really "underground" by most definitions...

Right, but they were signed at least a year before their albums dropped. They don't really seem like underground dudes at that point.

True but we can't really talk about someone as a sucessful artist of the year if he doesn't release anything but I can still change the thread title :y:

what about "which up and coming artist will be the most successful in 2013 ?"

Well no, I agree. But my point is that they aren't underground if they've been signed to a major label for a year or more. I would say they are newcomers, or even break-through artists, but underground rappers are a whole different type of animal.

You look at guys on Rhymesayers, those dudes are underground. If I had to say who the most successful underground artist of 2012 was, it would be El-P. Well, actually, I'm not even sure how to define that...his album had to have been one of the highest selling underground releases though. At this point, I'm just guessing, but it's so fucking nice. There's no way it didn't sell well.

Obviously you can't include everyone in the "underground", otherwise you'd be talking about 14 year old YouTube rappers, but there are successful guys doing it. Atmosphere had quite a bit of success in 2011 for example.

Good deal. :y:

Umm...hmmm...you know, I'm really not sure. I would be surprised if Ab-Soul outdid A$ap Rocky though. It would be nice, but I'm not sure it's all that likely.

his album was well received and he's now on TDE/interscope & Aftermath(with blackhippy) and his new album(collaborative album with the singler JMSN) is supposed to be released this year.

I can't see A$ap being the most succesful this year tbh, I just wanted ab-soul to do better than him :(
