I want to start listening to Nas.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to him. All I know from him is Illmatic, and I still haven't listened to all of it yet. I know everyone has different opinions on his discography, but what are his 'must-listens', 1-5?

I'd say everything is a must listen, in order; if not then you won't know the artist completely, and if you're not interested in knowing them completely, why at all? I dunno, maybe I'm a bit extreme but that's how I feel about it when listening to rappers... I'd say listen to everything he's done, in order.

As weird as it sounds, what really got me into Nas is his album Distant Relatives with Damian Marley. Such an amazing piece of work.

Get Life is Good. Is his best produced and pretty easy to get into. If you like that, then also try Hip Hop is Dead, God's Son, Illmatic and It Was Written. Stillmatic and Distant Relatives are also great.

Forget about his other albums.

One of Nas' strengths is storytelling and concept songs. You can check these out:

Undying Love - a very detailed story about his girl cheating on him
I Gave You Power - raps from the perspective of a gun
Rewind - he tells the story backwards
Fetus - he raps from the perspective of being in his mother's womb
One Love - the story is about him writing letters to his friends in jail

Some of the golden gems from his albums also include:

Nas Is Like
One Mic
Got Ur Self A...
The Message
Queens Get The Money
Thief's Theme
Loco-Motive
Hate Me Now
Hip-Hop Is Dead
Made You Look

And of course, you have Illmatic which is a masterpiece and a greatest hits collection by itself.
