Was Obie Trice ever famous?

Postby Tomer666 » Jan 29th, '13, 20:09

It's a dumb question, I know, I'm just 15 years old so I don't know much about the "history of rap"
I heard some people say Obie Trice used to be famous, so I wonder, is it true? Was he ever famous? If yes, then when? And how famous (like did everybody know him? or only those who knew some about rap knew him?)

Thanks, sorry for the stupid question.

Cheers is a platinum album, that means it sold like 1 000 000 which is a lot more than what Rick Ross or any of these guys sell now. Of course, the standards were different. But yeah, Obie was famous.

During a long moment, Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr Dre, G-Unit and Obie Trice dominated the rap game.

Thx, it pretty much answered my questions.
By the way, is it actually a thousand times harder for rappers nowadays to sell records rather than few years ago, or it's just that there aren't any huge hits today like there used to be?

It depends on what you mean by "famous."

Obie Trice was an underground rapper with some talent and mild acclaim, whom Eminem scooped up and thrust into the mainstream.

Eminem put his name in the first few seconds of a lead single, and then Eminem gave him an album loaded with ridiculous A-list production & features from front to back. Because of that, the album did pretty well.

Obie went on to make a second album, that didn't rely so much on other people, and was also pretty good...though it didn't sell as well.

It turned out Obie was a fine rapper, but not that engaging as a personality or solo act. So he was placed on the back burner for several years, and got tired of it, which is understandable. So he left.

Currently, Obie is on good terms with Eminem, but doesn't have much of a fanbase. He just put an album, to a lot of apathy. Unfortunately most of his fans were Eminem cum-guzzlers who lost interest the second he stopped being signed to their Lord and Savior.

Amongst rap fans, Obie Trice is "famous" in that most people know he is. Amongst casual rap fans, they have no clue, but they probably remember his name on "Without Me."

Based on the dismal sales of his latest album, I'd say he's not too famous. A lot of people only liked him because EMINEM OMG

Yep, I'd say Obie Trice *was* famous, simply because anyone attached to Shady/Aftermath during their heyday was immediately thrust into the mainstream attention. He was also a talented guy, with a debut album that did very well, even without a strong first single. (C'mon now, "Got Some Teeth"?)

Flash forward to the days before his leaving the label, and the poor bastard couldn't even get a TV financed.

If you have to ask, I think that your question answers itself. He was semi-famous when his name was attached to Eminem, yeah, but now no one really gives a fuck about him except his core fanbase.

It's harder to sell records, like people download it and overall, they don't buy albums like they use to. There are exceptions (Adele, Eminem) who still sell a lot of albums, but they would have sold more back then. (Well, Recovery almost sold as much as SSLP and Encore but whatever)

There are huge hits though, a lot of huge hits right now. So it's not about the hits.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fanbase? Most people who listen to Eminem are fans of him, and today most of the big names doesn't even have a fanbase, they only have people who like one, two or three songs of them and that's it.
Look at Gangnam Style, you can say it's a HUGE hit, but it still barely even sold anything compared to how many people listen to it. I think it's because he doesn't have a fanbase.

What do you think?

Not really. But he had his 2 seconds of fame (the intro of Without Me).

Plenty of people heard of him, but the only people who truly listen to him are Em fans.

Like famous to who? If I asked some random guy on the street "you know Obie Trice?" He might not know who Obie is but if I ask someone who knows hip-hop, yea that might now him. Em fans know him but at the same time they don'tknow him anything more than "Obie Trice, real name no gimmacks" then they aren't Obie fans. I wouldn't say Obie isn't famous but at the same time, I wouldn't say he isn't. If I had to compare him to someone, I would compare him to Joell Ortiz. Hip hop fans know Joell but outside of them, people don't know him.
