Of course it's all relative, but I think you're mistaking first world countries as the world. It's rare to meet truly happy human beings that have been brought up in a first world country. We're raised to consume as much as possible for ourselves and then die. And happiness becomes reliant on how much you brought in that month as opposed to coming through your natural built-in reward systems. Such as growing/hunting your own resources (which is the vast majority). These simple lifestyles are where you find the happiest people, (almost) regardless of the specific culture surrounding it.

That being said, such a lifestyle is very against the progression of technology/humanity as a whole. It doesn't work for a completely connected world for you to live in your own bubble of ignorance, and as time progresses we will continue to see this become more clear. But my point here is that we as stuck up consumers are not the world.

edit: and as for the internet being negative, I don't know where he's getting that from. there's some dark pockets for sure but the majority of people typically like being treated well. And when you're treated well it's hard to turn around and not be that way to the next guy.
