Will Redman Leave Def Jam before "Muddy Waters 2"?

The whole interview is good, but one of the things he says is that he isn't sure whether or not he wants to drop that album with Def Jam due to the way they operate now. Of course, he has said in the past that he would leave Def Jam for Shady Records in a second, but in this he actually seems like he's considering going with a different company for the album.

I'm not sure what his contractual obligations are with Def Jam, but he's talking like he has the option to leave. He isn't acting wild to get attention in this video either, as some of his rants in the past have been a little sensational. He's very logical and clear about his concerns, and he says that he's got a couple albums left in him before he starts playing the background. Muddy Waters 2 is going to be one of those albums.

He said the only question now is where he's going to release it. Does he risk it with Def Jam again, or go somewhere else?

The interview is good, it's not too long, but for that specific bit, go to 2:35.

Like pretty much ever other major label does now...

But he was mainly referring to the fact that they don't support their artists like they used to. They're no longer leaders in the genre, and it's upsetting. His primary concern is that he'll go to drop another album with him, and they'll fuck it up on the business side. He mentions how that happened before when they dropped three different artists (including him) albums in one month without any consideration towards promotion or timing.

He's talking about how indie hip hop labels can (or feel like they can) compete with Def Jam now, what was probably the most influential label in all of hip hop during a crucial time the the development of the genre. I mean, I would hope that he wouldn't go to Shady Records and get fucked over, but maybe he would do better somewhere else.

^ LMAO

As much as I would like to think that Redman would do well over at Shady Records, I just don't believe it to be true. It should work, for all of the reasons in the world. After all, Eminem respects Redman in a tremendous way, and the two working together could produce some great shit. You would think that between Eminem and even Paul Rosenberg (who seems to really love classic hip hop) Shady Records would be a perfect fit for Redman.

But. History has shown us that time and time again, Shady Records just isn't a good label to be on. It's only worked for a few artists, and that was at the peak of the Shady/Aftermath reign. Despite how much I would love to think that Redman on Shady Records would be the best thing that could possibly happen, I feel that we'd get something more like Reggie than Muddy Waters 2.

Oh yeah, Redman definitely knew what he was doing when he dropped Reggie.

He was just like Yelawolf with Radioactive. He was upfront about his intentions, and let everyone know that he was doing this album because he wanted to try and make some more mainstream sounding stuff, some music that he liked to hear when he was listening to the radio or in a club. I don't think he was coerced or anything like that.

My worry is that given the recent history, with the Interscope politics that seem to be involved with Shady releases, I'm afraid that he might have trouble pushing an album out without some sort of compromised single. Granted, they let Eminem do Relapse, but that's a completely different situation. Despite the fact that Redman is a living legend, I'm afraid that it might take some advocacy on Eminem's part to get a Redman album released exactly as Red would want. Knowing Eminem, I'm not sure that he would actually stand up for him like that.

I would hope that he would though. In any case, Redman wouldn't have to go to Shady Records. He could go anywhere. But if not there, where?
