Most Obvious Punch-Ins?

Postby Eedee » Feb 11th, '13, 11:03

Many will bring us his chorus on the SH song Asylum. That one was sloppy and obvious.

There's one on Not Afraid that I'm trying to find, but I've heard it before.

i havent heard the term 'punch-in' before. what is it?

edit: oh, you mean when a verse is recorded in full and then when bits and peices of it are erased and recorded over

When you start/stop recordings. Like when you're on a hard long stretch and you need to breathe, etc.

Yeah, it's a common thing to do while recording vocals. I need to do it. Em does it. Pretty much EVERY rapper does it, unless you're a faggot like Wayne who has such a slow flow and shit that he has no need to take a breather lol

Yeah, there are some parts of a song where it gets technical and it doesn't make sense recording a whole verse again just for 2 bars.

Eminem's verse in Our House is a possible example. It is segmented. But it sounds seamless (perhaps too seamless lol)

Yeah, I think it's more about this rather than pausing all the time. I always try to nail a whole verse in a single take because it's the most natural, but most of the time, some parts of one take are better than some parts of another take, so it's the best to combine them and get the ultimate take.

I was under the impression Eminem hardly did it in the 1990s, since he recorded on reel-to-reels and couldn't afford to do many takes.

Eminem on Infinite/SSEP was particularly impressive to nail all that shit without punching in.

Let me rephrase it then (lol). Nowadays, nearly EVERY rapper punches in.

i've always thought the obvious ones were deliberately that way. i like the sound of the choppy ones regardless of who it is

just sounds like intentional tone changes most of the time

Yeah well it can be impressive but there's no reason that he shouldn't do it...

It's like saying a director should cut a whole movie in one take.

The kind of emotion and switching of lines and ideas and cadences Em does is similar to scenes, so it's only right he should cut and piece it together and make it sharp and perfect.

But we all know he can perform the shit in one take, but it's not a sport.
