Ether vs Takeover (which was a better diss)

Postby tadpole25 » Feb 13th, '13, 00:37

IMO, both accomplished what they wanted.

Nas wanted to be more emotional.

Jay Z wanted to be more factual and numerical.

Nas wanted it to be murder (basically, him taking a machete and mangling Jay's face)

Jay wanted to poke fun (basically, be condescending, sitting in his luxurious office not taking Nas seriously)

Nas' song was more focused, whereas Jay only really had one verse about Nas. Looking back though, Ether was a hot track at the time, but now it's nothing special. Ether was light on multi's and some of his insults were just silly "cockafella records and gay z".
"I take yall diss as endearment - I love it when I hear it
Maybe words offensive - free speech I don't fear it
Maybe music can take us to a place so atmospheric
Beyond our greatest imagination, illuminatin' experience
If we open our ears and close our inhibitions, it's clear"

Always preferred Takeover cos of the factual stance Jay took plus when I hear "Laammmeeee" it kills me

yea, jay was all professor with the statistics.

nas' insults were really heated at the time, but when you look back its childish.

nas was trying really hard (too hard) to hit jay z. and jay z just had the attitude of "go away kid, stop playing with us adults".

That's because "ether" has its own urban meaning now: to destroy or kill another rapper on a song.

No one would say, "Man, you got takeover'd!", that just sounds stupid.

I have to go with Takeover. I understand Ether might have hurt Jay's pride at the time, but there's no getting away from hearing your enemy (at the time) prove your albums are garbage. Ouch.

You all focus on the bad puns in Ether but it had more lines that hit harder than Takeover.

"I am the truest; name a rapper that I ain't influenced
Gave y'all chapters but now I keep my eyes on the Judas
With Hawaiian Sophie fame, kept my name in his music"

"And his manuscript just sound stupid
When KRS already made an album called Blueprint
first Biggie's your man Then you got the nerve to say that you better than B.I.G
Dick suckin' lips Why don't you let the late, great veteran live"

"Rocafella died of AIDS, that was the end of his chapter
And that's the guy y'all chose to name your company after?
Put it together, I rock hoes, y'all rock fellas
And now y'all try to take my spot, fellas
Feel these hot rock fellas, put you in a dry spot, fellas
In a pine box with nine shots from my glock fellas"

And lets not forget "Eminem murdered you on your own shit"
Pretty much all of verse 3 actually.

Ether (outside of academic papers) was a word that was rarely used, so it was easier to assign to a slang term than the word Takeover was.

Keep in mind that Ether was hot back then, but it aged poorly. Think of Goldeneye 007 for the N64. It was a really good game for the console back then, but nowadays, it's just a typical shooting game and there's hundreds of them on the market.

This seems like its a contentious topic that people are willing to discuss.

My post isn't violating any of the rules, so go back to 4chan.

Which is why I don't even listen to people argue about this anymore. Selective hearing lol.

I just feel like the disses Nas put out in Ether were just words.

For example, "And Eminem murdered you on your own shit".

My first reaction "Okay, Nas. Let's see you put out a better verse than Em. No, seriously, sample the Renegade beat and drop a verse on it".

Nas clocked in more punches but Jay's punches were harder.

Haha yea, good analogy.

I thought Jay Z hold his own very well on Renegade (even though Em's verse was more memorable).

But I felt like Nas was just using words. Nothing too personal or specific, but just things that anyone could say.

It's like when that one guy in the battle forums said Spyder just makes a general diss verse and attaches someone's name to it.

nah, i'll make 5 more.

are there anything inherently wrong with these threads.

i didnt see anything in the rules about a 4-thread limit per day.
