the early 2000's. Specifically, right around MMLP (maybe released 2001?).

My appreciation of this album grows every time I give it a spin. I think the reason it was criticized so harshly was because in today's era, hip-hop is mostly punchline rap.

It's sad, really, because this album had the potential to spawn a sequel and possibly an entirely new direction from Eminem if it got positive ratings.

Releasing the album in 2000 would not have produced a different or better album. Are you saying Relapse isn't great because of when it was released?

bigray's right, Relapse was criticized for the accents moreso than the serial killer content or lack of punchlines. If Em made it without the accents it would have been better received.

I know Relapse is a great album. It's a fantastic fucking album.

But, I'm saying it would have received positive reviews and accepted as a great album in the mainstream if it was released in the 2000's.

The accents didn't stop anyone from buying the album. And in fact, only one or two songs contained the accent. The rest of the album was just with a high pitch, trying to imitate his younger self.

It probably would have been better received, but not by a lot. The people who bought Relapse at first were the hardcore fans and he has enough of those to make the shittiest album ever and still go Platinum by the second week. The accents were literally the biggest complaint. Everyone loved his rhyming and flows but the accents were tough to get used to.

I hated the accent at first but with time it grew on me and now I actually like it lol, better than that recovery screaming too.

No, Accents sound so perfect with that serial killer & monstorous concept. Yeah, it would have been more successful in those Dark-Album era. And another reason is, it's not a comeback Album. Recovery should have been there.
