In 2001, Eminem had everything going for him. The previous year, he had catapulted into superstardom with the release of his magnum opus, The Marshall Mathers LP, which became the fastest selling rap album in history. And going into the Grammys, he had to like his chances: He had unexpectedly won the Grammy for Best Rap Album for his debut, The Slim Shady LP, and there was an uneasy tension that maybe he won it because he was white.

However, Em was a lighting rod for controversy, especially because of his perceived homophobia. But at the show, Em went on stage with Elton John and they did an incredible rendition of Em's hit "Stan" right before Best Album was awarded. The stage was set and it felt like Em was destined to win but it wasn't meant to be. Steely Dan, a band whose popularity had peaked in the '70s, won the award, and took away the best chance of a hardcore hip-hop album ever winning Best Album.

That's definitely a fkn crime that MMLP didn't win 'Album of the Year'. He'll never re-create or be able to re-create what he did there, in that way, it's a totally unique piece of art that was in perfect symphony with the public and critical perception... it did what it intended, it's a masterpiece.

Yeah he did, but he hasn't won an 'Album of the Year' Grammy yet.

He won a 'Best Rap Album' Grammy for everything bar Encore, which is absolutely right / just. But I think he was brutally robbed of AOTY Grammy for 'MMLP'.

I think TES could have won it too, but of all his albums to win that award, MMLP was most deserving and the best chance he ever had, or will probably ever have.

Definitely don't think he should have won for Recovery! - it's a good album with some amazing heights but, nowhere near cohesive or unique enough to be album of the YEAR...

The Marshall Mathers LP... should have ab-so-fucking-lutely won it though. Hands down.

TES was nominated for AOTY too.

It's a bit of a crime he didn't win for MMLP or TES, I doubt he'll ever get a better chance. And both of those I think were album of the year caliber, but MMLP was a defining work that should have.

Suburbs is a dope album, the Grammy got it right.

I hope Em's do something this year that really feels like it deserves album of the year to me.

I remember after Eminem lost the AOTY to Arcade Fire this picture surfaced of a cartoon version of him, and the picture basically let us know what he was thinking. I think one of the thoughts was something like "Arcade Fire?!?" or something along those lines.
